==Material Rarity==
Materials are categorized by their rarity, which is influenced by when and where the material can be obtained by players.

* '''Common''' - The material is generally available throughout Elanthia, such as purchasable in shops, forageable, mineable, or lootable from creatures. They are not required for alterations.
* '''Rare''' - The material is found throughout Elanthia but is less likely to be found as common materials are. They are required for alterations.
* '''Special''' - The material is restricted to [[:Category:Auctions|auctions]], [[:Category:Quests|quests]], or other special events like [[:Category:Microtrans_events|microtransaction events]]. They are required for alterations.

==Alchemy materials==
==Alchemy materials==
Catalysts used in [[Alchemy]] can be metal, plant, bone, or even creature parts. Catalysts must be pure, alloys will not work. It may also be useful to have on hand this list of [[Healing Herbs]], which will also be used in creating the specific [[Remedies_Products|remedy]] you want. For an explanation about potency, efficacy, solubility, and toxicity see [[Remedies_discipline#Catalyst_Properties|catalyst properties]].
Catalysts used in [[Alchemy]] can be metal, plant, bone, or even creature parts. Catalysts must be pure, player-made alloys will not work. It may also be useful to have on hand this list of [[Healing herbs]], which will also be used in creating the specific [[Remedies_Products|remedy]] you want.

===Catalyst Properties===
Metal and plant catalysts have the following properties which help determine the final product:
* '''Workability''' - The difficulty of crafting the item. Lower workability catalysts require more skill to masterfully craft than higher workability catalysts.
* '''Potency''' - Magnitude of the healing. Potency drops every time the remedy pulses and is reduced when healing multiple wounded areas.
* '''Efficacy''' - The duration for which the remedy remains in effect.
* '''Solubility''' - The amount of time in between pulses. High solubility results in shorter time between pulses.
* '''Toxicity''' - The extent to which using a remedy increases your systemic toxicity. This will build and eventually cause penalties.

For additional notes about potency, efficacy, solubility, and toxicity see [[Remedies_discipline#Catalyst_Properties|catalyst properties]].

==Forging materials==
==Forging materials==
Metals are the primary materials used in the crafting disciplines of [[Blacksmithing]], [[Weaponsmithing]], and [[Armorsmithing]], and can be found in nugget, shard, fragment, tear, and lump forms by [[mining]]. They can also be found in bar, ingot, and fist forms elsewhere.
Metals are the primary materials used in the Forging disciplines of [[Armorsmithing_discipline|Armorsmithing]], [[Blacksmithing_discipline|Blacksmithing]], and [[Weaponsmithing_discipline|Weaponsmithing]], but is also used in [[Tinkering_discipline|Tinkering]] mechanisms. Metals are found in fragment, lump, nugget, shard, and tear forms by [[mining]] or in bar, ingot, and fist forms from [[random creature drop]]s, quest rewards, task rewards, and other sources.

Note that the crafting quality of an ingot is solely related to its purity, unlike the same information for completed items. Ingot quality caps at 99 (masterfully-crafted) regardless of the maker's skill.
The crafting quality of an ingot is its purity (99 quality being masterfully-crafted). The quality of a metal ingot can be reduced through mistakes in the smelting process or increased by refining.

With the release of [[DR 3.0]], all metal loot drops are now fully craftable. Note however that once a material has been processed it can no longer be sold to a gem appraiser.
As of [[DR 3.0]], all metal loot drops are now fully craftable. Once a metal drop has been smelted into an ingot, it can no longer be sold to a gem appraiser.

Alloys cannot be mined directly. They can be obtained from loot drops in small quantities, or produced in a crucible from their component metals. These do NOT have to be made using pure source materials (a tin-alloy ingot and a copper ingot will still mix to bronze and what ever else was in the tin-alloy ingot).

In most cases, these do NOT have to be made using pure source materials (a tin-alloy ingot and a copper ingot will still mix to bronze and what ever else was in the tin-alloy ingot). You can read more about metal alloys on the [[Forging_guide#Mixing_Metals_to_Create_Alloys|Forging guide]].

===Metal properties===
*Ductility is a trait only found in metals on the Test server currently and are subject to change. This metal trait affects the balance and power of crossbows when used to create the gear components of their mechanisms. Mechanisms created from high ductility metals will bonus the crossbow's balance. Mechanisms created from low ductility metals will greatly penalize balance, but provide a small boost to power.
Metals have the following properties which are used by templates to make crafted items:

*'''Hardness''' affects the damage of weapons and the speed of some tools.
*'''Durability''' affects the construction of the crafted item.
*'''Workability''' modifies the difficulty of crafting the item. Lower workability metals require more skill to masterfully craft than higher workability metals.
*'''Electrical resistance''' affects the electrical protection/absorption of metal armor.
*'''Thermal resistance''' affects the fire and cold protection/absorption of metal armor as well as the speed of some tools (e.g. tongs).
*'''Physical resistance''' affects the protection of metal armor as well as the speed of some tools (e.g. pliers).
*'''Ductility''' affects the balance and power of crossbows when used to create the gear components of their mechanisms. Mechanisms created from high ductility metals will bonus the crossbow's balance. Mechanisms created from low ductility metals will greatly penalize balance, but provide a small boost to power.
*'''Density''' affects the weight of the crafted product, the absorption of metal armors, and the speed of some tools.
*'''Enchant Capacity''' acts as a cap for Sigil Precision, which effectively becomes the "Hardness" stat for [[:Category:Enchantments|enchantments]]. Every Enchantment will make use of the Precision stat in a different way.

<nowiki>*</nowiki>: This means that if you have a boulder (Volume 5) and make it into a stirring rod which requires 4 volume ('a large rock') to make, you will have 1 volume (a pebble) left over.
* Stone volume is additive. As an example, if you have a boulder (5 volume) and make it into a stirring rod (requires a 4 volume "large rock") you will be left with a pebble (1 volume).
* Actual density of stone is (boulder weight / 6400). Each item has 2 volume values technically. Amount of stone needed to make the item, ie:pebble, stone, small rock, large rock, boulder. Volume of item which is used to determine weight of final product.

===Wood Properties===
Wood is used in both Shaping and Tinkering, and woods have the following properties which help determine the final product:

* '''Durability''' - affects the construction of the crafted item.
* '''Workability''' - the difficulty of crafting with the wood. Lower workability woods require more skill to masterfully craft than higher workability woods.
* '''Hardness''' - affects the damage of melee weapons and the speed of some tools.
* '''Stiffness''' - determines the balance and suitability of melee weapons; stiffer wood has less balance but more suitability.
* '''Physical Resistance''' - has no known effects
* '''<bow> Affinity''' - affects the damage of the specific bow type -- the "Hardness" stat for ranged weapons.
* '''Capacity''' - acts as a cap for Sigil Precision, which effectively becomes the "Hardness" stat for [[enchantments]]. Every Enchantment will make use of the Precision stat in a different way.
* '''Density''' - Weight (in stones) for one part of lumber; weight of a finished product is density times the number of parts required.

==Outfitting materials==
==Outfitting materials==
The primary materials for [[Outfitting]] are cloth and leathers. Cloth is woven from thread that is spun from fibers. Currently fibers are purchased or obtained from quests and other sources. Leather is obtained through the skinning, scraping, and curing of hides of animals.
Fibers from plants (and possibly animals) will be used to create fabrics and leathers made from creature skins are the primary materials for [[Outfitting]].<br/>
Currently a Festival-only system, the [[Artistry_dye|Artistry Dye]] system is likely to fall under the [[Artistry]] Discipline, possibly with some crossover from one of the [[Alchemy]] Disciplines. You can use these dyes with any item that is currently made with the new systems.

These are the raw materials from which crafted items are constructed. As more systems are released, this section will be expanded.

Material Rarity

Materials are categorized by their rarity, which is influenced by when and where the material can be obtained by players.

  • Common - The material is generally available throughout Elanthia, such as purchasable in shops, forageable, mineable, or lootable from creatures. They are not required for alterations.
  • Rare - The material is found throughout Elanthia but is less likely to be found as common materials are. They are required for alterations.
  • Special - The material is restricted to auctions, quests, or other special events like microtransaction events. They are required for alterations.

Alchemy materials

Catalysts used in Alchemy can be metal, plant, bone, or even creature parts. Catalysts must be pure, player-made alloys will not work. It may also be useful to have on hand this list of Healing herbs, which will also be used in creating the specific remedy you want.

Catalyst Properties

Metal and plant catalysts have the following properties which help determine the final product:

  • Workability - The difficulty of crafting the item. Lower workability catalysts require more skill to masterfully craft than higher workability catalysts.
  • Potency - Magnitude of the healing. Potency drops every time the remedy pulses and is reduced when healing multiple wounded areas.
  • Efficacy - The duration for which the remedy remains in effect.
  • Solubility - The amount of time in between pulses. High solubility results in shorter time between pulses.
  • Toxicity - The extent to which using a remedy increases your systemic toxicity. This will build and eventually cause penalties.

For additional notes about potency, efficacy, solubility, and toxicity see catalyst properties.

Forging materials

Metals are the primary materials used in the Forging disciplines of Armorsmithing, Blacksmithing, and Weaponsmithing, but is also used in Tinkering mechanisms. Metals are found in fragment, lump, nugget, shard, and tear forms by mining or in bar, ingot, and fist forms from random creature drops, quest rewards, task rewards, and other sources.

The crafting quality of an ingot is its purity (99 quality being masterfully-crafted). The quality of a metal ingot can be reduced through mistakes in the smelting process or increased by refining.

As of DR 3.0, all metal loot drops are now fully craftable. Once a metal drop has been smelted into an ingot, it can no longer be sold to a gem appraiser.

Alloys are not mined directly. They can be obtained from loot drops in small quantities, or produced in a crucible from their component metals. In most cases, these do NOT have to be made using pure source materials (a tin-alloy ingot and a copper ingot will still mix to bronze and what ever else was in the tin-alloy ingot). You can read more about metal alloys on the Forging guide.

Metal properties

Metals have the following properties which are used by templates to make crafted items:

  • Hardness affects the damage of weapons and the speed of some tools.
  • Durability affects the construction of the crafted item.
  • Workability modifies the difficulty of crafting the item. Lower workability metals require more skill to masterfully craft than higher workability metals.
  • Electrical resistance affects the electrical protection/absorption of metal armor.
  • Thermal resistance affects the fire and cold protection/absorption of metal armor as well as the speed of some tools (e.g. tongs).
  • Physical resistance affects the protection of metal armor as well as the speed of some tools (e.g. pliers).
  • Ductility affects the balance and power of crossbows when used to create the gear components of their mechanisms. Mechanisms created from high ductility metals will bonus the crossbow's balance. Mechanisms created from low ductility metals will greatly penalize balance, but provide a small boost to power.
  • Density affects the weight of the crafted product, the absorption of metal armors, and the speed of some tools.
  • Enchant Capacity acts as a cap for Sigil Precision, which effectively becomes the "Hardness" stat for enchantments. Every Enchantment will make use of the Precision stat in a different way.

  • Stone volume is additive. As an example, if you have a boulder (5 volume) and make it into a stirring rod (requires a 4 volume "large rock") you will be left with a pebble (1 volume).
  • Actual density of stone is (boulder weight / 6400). Each item has 2 volume values technically. Amount of stone needed to make the item, ie:pebble, stone, small rock, large rock, boulder. Volume of item which is used to determine weight of final product.

Wood Properties

Wood is used in both Shaping and Tinkering, and woods have the following properties which help determine the final product:

  • Durability - affects the construction of the crafted item.
  • Workability - the difficulty of crafting with the wood. Lower workability woods require more skill to masterfully craft than higher workability woods.
  • Hardness - affects the damage of melee weapons and the speed of some tools.
  • Stiffness - determines the balance and suitability of melee weapons; stiffer wood has less balance but more suitability.
  • Physical Resistance - has no known effects
  • <bow> Affinity - affects the damage of the specific bow type -- the "Hardness" stat for ranged weapons.
  • Capacity - acts as a cap for Sigil Precision, which effectively becomes the "Hardness" stat for enchantments. Every Enchantment will make use of the Precision stat in a different way.
  • Density - Weight (in stones) for one part of lumber; weight of a finished product is density times the number of parts required.

Outfitting materials

The primary materials for Outfitting are cloth and leathers. Cloth is woven from thread that is spun from fibers. Currently fibers are purchased or obtained from quests and other sources. Leather is obtained through the skinning, scraping, and curing of hides of animals.

Currently a Festival-only system, the Artistry Dye system is likely to fall under the Artistry Discipline, possibly with some crossover from one of the Alchemy Disciplines. You can use these dyes with any item that is currently made with the "new" crafting systems.
