Alabaster is a mineral or rock that is soft and often used for carving. The purest alabaster is a snow-white material of fine uniform grain, but often associated with an oxide of iron, which produces brown clouding and veining in the stone. Alabaster is sometimes known as plaster stone and if heat treated, it very closely resembles true marble.

Alabaster is a porous stone and can be dyed into any color or shade. A very misleading imitation of coral that is called alabaster coral is produced in this manner.
