Elm wood is valued for its interlocking grain and resistance to splitting. It has high use for wagon wheel hubs, chair seats, and coffins. Elm wood is resistant to decay when permanently wet, making it ideal for keels, bows, and piers.
Elm heartwood is light tan to medium reddish brown. Paler sapwood can be as light as off-white with a grain that resembles ash. Elm bark is typically ash-gray.
