Instruments are the primary way which all players learn and use the performance skill. While some can be played alone, many others require a tool in order to use correctly. Ownership of an instrument can also allow a user to practice the appraisal skill by utilizing the ASSESS command to see greater details about it. While only Bards and Traders are able to get all the information about an instrument through ASSESS, any member of any guild can get basic knowledge.
In addition to the ASSESS command, all instruments are able to be used with the RECALL system. Use of RECALL does not grant any experience in any skill, but does provide players with a simple way to find out more about the instrument itself like typical construction, how it is sounds when played, if there are any racial associations, and what tool it is generally played with. Here is a list of Instrument recalls.

Bards and non-Bards of sufficient skill can increase the spirit regeneration of all those in the room by flawlessly playing a minuet (or higher) on any percussion instrument.
Training
The best experience per time ratio is achieved by finding an instrument/song combination that is played "with only the slightest hint of difficulty."
Instrument Quality
Instruments come in a variety of different quality levels. This currently does not impact anything beyond the amount the instrument is worth. However, higher value instruments can give more experience when APPRAISED and ASSESSED. Bards see this information in both ASSESS and APPRAISE. Non-Bards only see this in ASSESS
- Note: In addition to the normal instrument quality ranges, there are some irregular quality ranges. These are mostly due to instrument alterations.
- For example, if your instrument was originally finely made and then you had it altered by a merchant in a special way to go down in quality, it might end up looking very crudely made, and was once finely made.
