The Inquisition is a large, interprovincial organization dedicated to stamping out Necromancy across the land. The organization currently acts in full cooperation with provincial leaders, but seems to have little trouble going above the law when the need arises.
Methods
The Inquisition is interested in capturing, questioning, and permanently destroying Necromancers, as well as destroying their works and gathering places, dispersing their cults, and destroying or locking away all of their blasphemous research. They generally rely on local authorities to arrest the offenders, who then turn them over to the Inquisition, generally never to be seen again.
At one time, the Inquisition had a holy artifact that could be used to destroy a Necromancer's profane aegis--the effect that lets them escape death even without favor from the gods. However, it was damaged by Xerasyth after he allowed himself to be captured.
It should be noted that not all Necromancers are protected by the profane aegis, and some sent to the dungeon have still died a final death.
Controversy
Though ostensibly acting for the greater good, the inquisition has wrongly jailed, tortured, and killed more than one innocent victim. There is a common misconception that the order has flagrantly broken regional law when Cierzen, a government official of Shard, was taken by Khurek on suspicion of profane work. It was discovered that he had indeed practiced sorcery. It is at this point when Sothavi stepped in and became the overseer of the Inquisition in Ilithi.
The Inquisition also associates with The Hounds of Rutilor, a far more zealous order who seek to destroy all traces of necromancy by brute force, rather than through careful investigation and research. Though blunt, their tactics have at least proven effective in keeping the city streets free of evildoers. This violent sect should not be confused as being the Inquisition, both are separate groups.
History
In response to the threat posed by the Necrolord Lyras and her undead army, High Priestess Tallis, of the Crossing Temple and head of the Cleric Council, authorized Temple Inquisitor Khurek to begin investigating possible Necromancers and purge them of their Profane Aegis on their journey to the Red Spiral. Khurek is assisted by Temple Inquisitress Sinstra.
In 397, the church, aided by the Inquisition, Empath Guild, and possibly unwittingly by the Necromancers themselves, formulated a plan to destroy Lyras once and for all. At a bitter cost, she was finally defeated.
Getting Involved
Inquisitors sanctioned by the Temple are spread through the provinces of Elanthia. In some provinces they have gathered followers who help rid the lands of the corruption. There are three separate categories for players involved in the Inquisition, these are:
Inquisitors: Players who have been sanctioned by the Temple (in most cases) to carry out the work of the Inquisition.
Followers: Players who follow under the lead of an Inquisitor and aid their work.
Supporters: Players who are not under the command of an Inquisitor but support their work and have chosen to be identified.
