The Disarm Traps skill is used to disarm traps safely and quickly. It is trained, as one might expect, by disarming challenging traps. Traps are most commonly found on treasure boxes dropped by creatures, but may also be found in fixed locations, for example when passing through a room (like in the Undershard Gallery) or on an entryway (such as the door to the Baron's office in Theren Keep).

Disarm Help

Basic Disarm Usage

DISARM <ITEM>: This will default to a normal attempt to disarm a trap.
DISARM <ITEM> <OPTION>: Disarms using the options below.

IDENTIFY

Provides you with information about the nature of the trap protecting the item as well as a rough estimate of how difficult the trap will be to disarm under normal circumstances based on your skill level. This is an optional step and is not a requirement for the use of the ALL, CAREFUL, NORMAL, QUICK, ANALYZE or HARVEST options. However, it is required if you plan to make use of the MARK option.

MARK

Allows you to mark down your knowledge of what kind of trap protects the item. Requires you first make use of the IDENTIFY option (Thieves may optionally make use of GLANCE to achieve the same effect). If you choose not to use MARK, there is an increase in the difficulty of all subsequent disarming maneuvers (with the exception of HARVEST). This step is optional.

CAREFUL

A careful attempt to disarm a trap. Difficulty and risk are reduced, and thus the experience gained is also reduced. The required time increases.

QUICK

A rapid attempt to disarm a trap. Difficulty increases, risk increases, and the required time decreases. Experience gained for success also increases.

ALL

Attempts to disarm any and all traps that are present on an object. This is an extremely difficult maneuver and is increasingly more difficult with each additional trap on the object. Requires less time than disarming each trap successively but difficulty and risk are increased.

BLIND

Must be a Thief or have sufficient skill. A showy maneuver designed to highlight your expertise, this maneuver is available to all characters who have achieved a certain level of skill. The maneuver itself is more difficult and riskier than the QUICK maneuver, but does share that maneuver's speed.

ANALYZE

Thief only. Allows a more in-depth study of the device's inner-workings to reduce the difficulty of subsequent harvesting attempts. This is an advanced technique restricted to professional locksmiths and carries an increased difficulty level, increased risk, and increases the time required. This maneuver is used instead of ALL, CAREFUL, (default), or QUICK options.

HARVEST

Thief only. Allows a professional locksmith to harvest a component of the trap to sell at selected shops or potentially use to construct their own traps someday. This maneuver is made more difficult if you did not use the ANALYZE option in the disarming attempt.

Disarming Experience

As a general statement, the more difficult the maneuver, the more you can expect to learn from the risk you take. Likewise, a more difficult trap relative to your skill level will present a greater potential to learn from the risk.

For the maximum amount of experience, a person should do the following:

  • Disarm Identify or Glance (no experience gained from either).
  • Disarm Mark
  • Disarm at the quickest speed possible (Blind, Quick, Normal, Careful)
  • Disarm Analyze (Thief only)
  • Disarm Harvest (Thief only)
