Ruby, like sapphire, is a variety of corundum, an aluminum oxide. The coloration of a ruby is due to chromium. It can be found in colors ranging from orange-red to purple-red and is typically pinkish red or blood-red. Rubies may exhibit a range of secondary hues, including orange, purple, violet, and pink.

Generally, any gemstone-quality corundum in a shade of red or pink is referred to as a ruby and all others (yellow, green, blue, violet) are called sapphire. Some regionally applied quality rules based on minimum color saturation result in stones being referred to as pink sapphire. In fact, all other hues of corundum are called sapphire.
