Sapphire, like ruby is a variety of corundum, an aluminum oxide. It is typically blue, but can also occur in yellow, purple, orange, and green colors. Parti sapphires show two or more colors. Red corundum stones also occur, but are called rubies, not sapphires. Pink-colored corundum may be classified as either depending on locale. Some regionally applied quality rules based on minimum color saturation result in stones being referred to as pink sapphire. In fact, all other hues of corundum besides red are called sapphire.
