Demon
Modern Elanthian scholars define a demon as a malevolent entity from or linked to a plane other than the Plane of Abiding. In the past, many other types of entities have been referred to as "demons," such as creatures of the Plane of Probability, but this is not strictly accurate.
Demons are by and large horrifying and malevolent creatures whose very presence on the Plane of Abiding is destructive and corrupting. Beyond any problems that they may cause directly, the major danger of demonic creatures is in the link to their home plane; when a portal opens between two planes, the areas around them begin to take on many of the characteristics of that other plane. Should enough power be used, or the portal stay open for too long, the planes begin to merge together and alter the realities and physical laws of both planes, which can be devastating and deadly to inhabitants in both.[1]
It has been strongly hinted that the source of a Necromancer's power is ultimately and inevitably demonic, especially once they delve into the spiritual.
Types
The Hunger
The demon that granted the Devourer Lyras her power is known by the epithet "The Hunger" due to its perceived wish to consume all matter and energy on the Plane of Abiding and possibly the Spiritual Plane, from the very base to the most refined. Little is known about it beyond the fact that its appearance with Lyras is its third incarnation on this plane, and that its second before this was an entity named Entropy's Glory that plagued the Moon Mage Guild before it was exorcised. The Hunger supposedly has a true name that Edward the Exorcist discovered and threatened it with thereby forcing it to temporarily withdraw, implying that its name has some kind of power over it.
Maelshyve
Maelshyve has alternatively been referred to by PCs and GMPCs alike as a demon and a demigoddess since her awakening at the hands of the necromancer Archrost. She is (or was once) so powerful she could not be destroyed, only sealed away for millenia, and she claims the Void is her domain, which Urrem'tier usurped.
Maelshyve has an army of powerful servants at her disposal, which the words 'Maelshyvean' and 'demonic' are interchangeably used to describe.
