Smelting is simply the process of melting down the metal and forming it into an ingot. It is the starting point not only for blacksmithing items, but also [[Weaponsmithing discipline|weaponsmithing]] and [[Armorsmithing discipline|armorsmithing]].


As with all crafting disciplines, you may learn a range techniques from a Forging Society Master/Mistress to make Blacksmithing tasks easier. Some techniques are required in order to perform specific tasks (e.g. [[Blacksmithing_techniques#Maker_Mark_Design|Maker Mark Design]]). Other techniques increase your abilities at crafting types of items (e.g. [[Blacksmithing_techniques#Proficient_Forging_Tool_Design|Basic Forging Tool Design]]) or increase your effectiveness at performing tasks (e.g. [[Blacksmithing_techniques#Basic_Tool_Repair|Basic Tool Repair]]).
Begin by placing all the desired components into the crucible. Then, holding a stirring rod {{com|stir}}/{{com|mix}} {{tt|crucible with rod}}, until a problem occurs.

When smelting multiple items there are a couple important things to know.

Beyond limiting the crucible to one object at a time, and changing the first step to {{com|pour}}ing the borax flux into the crucible, the refining process identical to that of smelting. Refining will raise the purity the metal added, but will reduce the volume by 50%. The [[Blacksmithing Techniques#Intermediate Refining Technique]] will reduce the volume loss to only 20%.

Note that only fully completed items can be reclaimed, and the resulting volume will be reduced by about 20%.
