Syntax

  • INVOKE
Recalls a weapon treated with a bonding potion. If more than one bonded weapon is eligible, this form does not accept a weapon name to select one.
  • INVOKE BOND
Also recalls an eligible bonded weapon. Adding an item name does not select a particular weapon.
  • INVOKE <CAMBRINTH ITEM>
Establishes a link to the specified charged cambrinth item and makes its stored mana available to both ordinary and cyclic spells.
  • INVOKE <CAMBRINTH ITEM> <AMOUNT>
Attempts to make only the specified amount of stored mana available. This requires an Arcana skill check; requesting all the stored mana or more links all of it without the partial-mana check.
  • INVOKE <CAMBRINTH ITEM> SPELL
With Dedicated Cambrinth Use, restricts the link to mana drawn when non-cyclic spells are cast. Without the feat, the qualifier is accepted but has no effect.
  • INVOKE <CAMBRINTH ITEM> CYCLIC
With Dedicated Cambrinth Use, restricts the link to mana used for cyclic spell upkeep. Without the feat, the qualifier is accepted but has no effect.
  • INVOKE <CAMBRINTH ITEM> <AMOUNT> SPELL|CYCLIC
Combines the partial-mana and restricted-use forms. The amount must precede SPELL or CYCLIC.
  • INVOKE <RITUAL FOCUS>
While preparing the matching ritual spell, invokes the proper ritual focus to reduce part of the spell's mana cost. The focus has its own Arcana check.
  • INVOKE <RUNESTONE>
Begins preparing the spell held in a runestone. The runestone must first have been focused upon.
  • INVOKE <SPELLBOOK>
A closed custom spellbook fitted with a hafaltu-veined kuldaez crystal activates the spell in the crystal. An open custom spellbook turned to a scribed spell in its Scrolls chapter instead attempts to memorize that spell temporarily.
  • INVOKE <SPELL SCROLL>
Attempts to temporarily memorize the spell on a previously read spell scroll.
  • INVOKE <MAGICAL DEVICE> [<TARGET>]
Activates an item whose own mechanics use INVOKE. Requirements and results are specific to the device; an ordinary targeted magical device must be held.

Cambrinth

Invoking charged cambrinth creates a temporary link. Re-invoking the same item can change its link between ordinary spells, cyclic upkeep or both. The SPELL and CYCLIC restrictions are properties of that link rather than permanent toggles.

The link fails if the cambrinth is uncharged, contains energy of an incompatible mana type or exceeds the user's ability to invoke. A successful link normally has a one-second roundtime. The depleted-item and incompatible-mana refusals have a five-second roundtime, while failure to forge the link has a four-second roundtime. An item that has never been charged has a separate refusal.

Spell scrolls

A spell scroll must be read before it can be invoked. The spell must not already be known, and the user must be able to hold another temporarily memorized scroll spell. Improved Memory permits a second scroll spell; a third cannot be held.

A non-signature spell within the user's mana frequency may be invoked across guild spellbooks without Magic Theorist. Magic Theorist is required for a spell outside the user's mana frequency. Signature spells remain restricted to their associated guild. Success also depends on Arcana and on the condition and difficulty of the scroll.

Notes

  • The shortest abbreviation is INVO. INV is interpreted as INVENTORY.
  • Many magical devices implement their own invocation behavior. The cambrinth and scroll messages above do not describe every item-specific activation.
