History

The peddler that first sold these cakes appeared at one of the Ratha Festivals and had picked up steam by the early Ilithi Festivals (the ones held by SCC, not the ones in Shard), where unique baubles were sold as part of the festival auction. They were such a hit that the peddler consequently appeared at nearly every festival and pay festival thereafter for many years. In many instances, the theme of the cake prizes was adapted to the location. For instance, the peddler on the Taisidon Safari quests had cakes with a tropical theme for the prizes (phofe flowers, paguur, etc.) where the Bardic fests would see the peddler selling cakes with musical themed items (lyres, tankards, etc.).
In 2013, the cakes were put back into the game via the Darkbox at the Hollow's Eve festival. In 2014, the Taisidon Safari quests were re-released as well and the peddler once again sold her cakes.
The cakes were designed by GM Tinsie, who passed away in 2002. A log of her IG memorial service is housed here [1] and the cakes are talked about a number of times. You can also ask the peddler in game about Tinsie (ASK PEDDLER ABOUT TINSIE):
"A single tear comes to the pastry peddler's eye. "One of the most wonderful souls to have ever walked Elanthia, surely. May Glythtide's mirth and Eylhaar's protection always abound where the unmatched kindness of her blessed soul rests.""

Hidden Prizes

On eating the cakes, you have the chance to find a trinket, a bauble or a small piece of cambrinth. Each event has it's own theme of cake prizes, as detailed below.

Trinkets & Baubles

Each cake has a chance to make a randomized trinket or bauble, which are generic-worn items. The trinkets are very simple, and the baubles have a few verbs. They both fall into the same pattern of creation. For trinkets, a <trinket material> <shape> trinket (ex. a tin mask trinket). For baubles, a <bauble material> <shape> bauble (ex. a sapphire parrot bauble).

Bauble Materials

Cambrinth

Each cake also has a very low chance to produce a generic-worn piece of cambrinth that will hold 4 mana. The cambrinth will fall into the following pattern of creation: a diminutive cambrinth <shape> (ex. a diminutive cambrinth skull).
