Old Friends

Where are you,
Our friends of old,
You loves we've lost,
You fighters bold?

Where are you,
Our families dear,
Our darling ones,
Who had no fear?

Where are you,
Those we knew?
Where have you gone,
Our missing crew?

We miss your hearts,
Your souls, your smiles.
We see your eyes,
across the miles.

Remember when,
We did that thing?
We promised to,
Not say anything.

Please return,
Our friends long-gone,
It's to you,
Our hearts are drawn.

For those lost ones,
Who can't return,
It's for you,
Our tears now burn.

Soon will be,
The time for us.
Will those remaining
Miss us as much?

If us they miss,
Pleased we'll be,
For the laughs we had,
And the company.

If forgotten we fade...

Cythra pauses for dramatic effect.

Cythra sticks her tongue out and let loose with a loud, "Thbtbtbt" from her lips!

Conception Notes:

I often think about the Elanthians I miss. I've been a part of this world off and on for nearly 25 years and have seen a lot of people come and go. Some of them will never return. Yes, I'm afraid I tend to get maudlin about it. When I wrote this, I never suspected that Eerie would be one I'd be getting maudlin about. Wherever she is, I guess, nothing... nobody is forever. I, however, welcome her coming along and changing my mind. It was written with the thoughts of so many from my past in mind: Wonderful and beloved friends from when I was in the Apostles, like Leilany and Sundell, friends from the White Rose I used to hang out with years ago like Abi, Katjia and Ariya (when she's on hiatus), families that adopted me like my dear Seords (particularly Ana, Walcar, Ihya, and Annieka) and Talliska of Wildclaw Hub. The list goes on. Xixist had recently passed, and, though I didn't really know him, something like that still has a wide effect. I sang it for Kaelie when we lost her. It pains me to think how many more I could potentially be singing this for someday. At some point, maybe someone will sing it for me. In the meantime, I try to leave my mark on this world. Hopefully, people find it to be a positive thing. Cythra the consummate entertainer. ;)

The song originally ended at, "Will those remaining miss us as much?" Eerie felt strongly that it shouldn't end on a question. Actually, she doesn't like endings at all. She was a great collaborator who contributed more to my writings than anybody, probably including her, realize. She wrote the the last verse which I edited only slightly to make it fit the scheme of the song a little better. I then provided the final, "comedic", touch.
