Her position during the Belirendrick-Sirolarn-Vorclaf succession in Zoluren

coughs:: Lindryl didn't side with Sirolarn. She commented on a couple of occassions to members of the Dirge Council that Sirolarn was dangerous and would see them dead, herself included, if he ever found out she was warning them. She urged people to find the real killer, and received a package from a young Prydaen who spoke no language other than his own. It was proported to contain information about Vorclaf's whereabouts.

Shortly after this package was delivered and her last warning to the members of the Dirge Council, Lindryl "retired" from public life to the quiet of one of Sirolarn's estates due to the delicacy of her health and the strain of her pregnancy. Some strange rumors floated about regarding her and her baby -- that it was the illegitimate child of the old prince, that it was Vorclaf's, even that it was Sirolarn's. More reliable rumors, as far as rumors are ever reliable, indicate Vorclaf is well aware of her covert attempts to warn about Sirolarn and that after Vorclaf regained control of the government he freed her from what was essentially house arrest. Supposedly, she is currently residing quietly in M'Riss with her new human husband and their son, with occasional trips to Leth to carry out formal duties of her office.

As ever, she is the devoted servant of the House of Zoluren, and dedicated to seeing Leth remain under that House's governance.

Lindryl and Race

DR-MERIEL Re: Racism RP (a bit long) · on 7/1/2004 8:03:43 PM Generate a link to this post in a pop-up window. 4072 reply Reply Interesting thread.

There are places in the realms where racism is institutionalized. It's very obvious in many places on Mer'Kresh -- a S'Kra can barely get a seat from the maitre d' at one of the finer restaurants. There are unflattering characitures of S'Kra. There are the unhappy S'Kra ghosts. There is abundant "reason" for the Rissans to have their S'Kra prejudices -- yet at the same time, one could wonder how a Rissan could possibly tolerate racism philosophically? The island itself was settled by Elves and Human inter-mixers/inter-breeders during the War of Tears. That is, back when mixing could get you killed.

Now the official position of the Rissan government is that they accept refugees of any variety so long as said refugees adhere to Rissan law. They don't overtly discriminate between S'Kra and non-S'Kra... but the feel of the populace (not necessarily players, mind... but the descriptions, NPCs, etc.) is definitely anti-S'Kra.

As far as Lindryl and Keresyk and Emmi are concerned... when Lindryl was created, she was presented as having mixed parentage and her looks are more like a short, voluptuous human woman with pointed ears than an elf. She is within the "norm" parameters for elven women, but just barely. I fully expected her to encounter racism from humans, from elves ... in short from everyone. Curiously, as the game has been played over the years, there was more racial animosity displayed toward her when the game was newer and less developed than is displayed toward her now. I mean... c'mon. She's from a bastard Sorvendig line, of mixed parentage and while acknowledged within the family and accepted with love and affection was not OPENLY recognized as Sorvendig until Vorclaf took the throne. She was one of the dirty "secrets" that Zoluren nobility talked about behind their hands (and no doubt still do). So far as the common Zolurenite was concerned her connection to the royal family was one of those rumors -- heavily supported by her close association with the royal family and her startling resemblence to them. Keresyk looks so much like Belirendrik when the old prince was young that Captain Owaen commented on it the first time he met Keresyk.

Yet... for all the ammuntion given to folks to RP racial aspects in interacting with that sort of NPC, people rarely do and even less now than a few years ago -- and they overlook or don't notice instances when NPCs display racial or regional prejudice. Lindryl always got more grief over her... erm... "loose" way with men rather than the race of the men with whom she was being loose!

Lindryl and the royal family of Zoluren

11/16/2003 DR-MERIEL And yet... there are books that claim there were shots from the grassy knoll, too :D

There is a lot of RP and history that went on before and after various books were written, either by GM or player; information that NPCs themselves say that never quite makes it into the "official annals". Vorclaf's mother, for instance -- supposedly she died in childbirth bearing Vorclaf's younger brother (who was stillborn). Belirenderick was grief-stricken and never remarried. And Sirolarn being brought up a commoner? Perhaps. But other sources would indicate that you that Belirenderick raised Sirolarn. Sirolarn himself said so at one point. Some sources will say that Sirolarn was actually Belirenderick's brother, or his half-brother, not his nephew. And Belirendrick's father's liaison with an Elvish woman that resulted in Lindryl's line, which has produced the current heir to Zoluren, is rarely spoken about at all and not mentioned in any book (illegitimate children usually get ignored!). But, Lindryl is fortunate that Belirendrick's affection for her (and perhaps her mother, who would have been Belirendrick's "natural" half-sister) was such that he recognized both as family and conferred legitimacy upon them -- which Vorclaf has continued.

That's one of the fun things about having a variety of versions floating around; you never know what is REALLY the truth and gives a good bit of leeway for RP.

One of the best sites for what's happened in the past, rumors and perhaps-fact, are the things players have written on their websites at the time an event ocurred. The Wren's Nest articles are an excellent source. Rayth's discussion of the governments of Elanthia is interesting and from a "what happened during the in-game event" aspect is quite accurate. Books are a good source, of course; but remember like the real world you'll find all sorts of things being written with varying viewpoints and accuracy. And, like the real world, I'd more trust the eyewitness sources over any book. (Of course, there's always the chance that maybe the CIA =did= do it!)

One of the things that startled me when doing a search on Belirenderick regarding his assassination (and remember my NPC was THERE) was seeing a capture of the whole thing at Wren's Nest. There were things I remembered, things I didn't remember and it was very interesting to see it from a player point of view. I'm sure that player would have written a very different book from the one my NPC would have.

So... just relax and enjoy playing. You're never going to prove that you're exactly right and Vorclaf is a murderer; nor is it likely that you'll ever be disproved entirely that you're wrong and he isn't. Just have fun :)

Oh... and remember -- as always, this is my personal point of view.

Lindryl and her marriage to Ralel

11/8/2003 by DR-MERIEL

"Must be that hare-brained side still don't trust her;)"

Heh. Just remember the poor thing's only about 100 years old. By Elvish standards, she wasn't old enough to marry Ralel -- but was manipulated into it by Morganae. Plus he was good-looking and flattering, and she was away from home for the first time, so her foolish head was turned. Belirendrick was furious with her since he'd wanted to marry her into the Theren nobility. After the marriage was made, Lindryl understood what Morganae and Ralel were about, and bolted back home to the Zoluren court. Belirenderick accepted her repentence for being disobedient to him and she never strayed in her actions from his will again. She was always his favorite pet (having no daughters himself) and he not only welcomed her back, he forgave her. Right up to his last breath he indulged her in all things except granting an annulment from Ralel, and generally just spoiled her rotten.

So yes, she's a rather scatter-brained thing. She's too young to be married and she's >way< too young to have a kid. She should have been reared with more discipline, and Belirenderick should never have sent her to Morganae's court no matter how earnest the invitation to teach Lindryl more about her elven heritage. In human terms, she'd probably have had the maturity of a 13 or 14-year old. When she met Keirnen, she'd have been more equivalent to a 15 or 16-year old, and had about as much sense. Yes, a mother at 16-ish, and the father not her husband! Keirnen, being Rissan and therefore knowledgeable about Elves should have known better, but he's as reckless as the rest of the Allvar family.

Still, she has served the Sorvendig family as best she can, given her teenage hormones and lapses in commonsense. She stuck out staying with Sirolarn, at Vorclaf's instruction, during Sirolarn's thankfully brief reign to spy on him for Vorclaf. She was scared even sillier than she usually is, and had to try to dodge Sirolarn's lewd, smarmy attentions, but she stayed and never complained to Vorclaf.

Vorclaf is a man of intelligence and while he has a lot of family affection for Lindryl, understands her weaknesses and lack of maturity -- hence his wish that Keresyk be fostered with him once it was obvious that Keresyk was endangered on M'Riss. Not only for Keresyk's safety, but also so the boy could be taught properly how to rule Leth, and if necessary, Zoluren. Keirnen isn't particularly happy with that arrangement, but at Keresyk is more safe in Zoluren and is learning what he needs to know, so Keirnen accepts it. Lindryl doesn't think about it one way or the other; if Vorclaf says that Keresyk is to be reared under Vorclaf's supervision, she simply accepts it and that is what is done.

So Arrys... she's probably not untrustworthy from a malice point of view... but she may be in the sense that she's not mature enough to always make the right choices.

Assassination

While serving as mayor of Leth Deriel, Lindryl was assassinated by Lilheart, a member of the organized crime organization Hing. The motive is unknown at this time but the kill was likely racially motivated.

Ulf'Hara Destruction -- 17 Shorka, 410 AV

Lindryl was one of the many who perished in the bombing of Ulf'Hara Keep by the Elpalzi.
