Poach
A ranged-weapon attack made from hiding or invisibility. It resolves as a normal FIRE, always brings you out of hiding, and trains Stealth as a contest against the target's Perception.
POACH <creature> (winning the stealth contest)

You see: You slip quietly from your hiding place, convinced that you successfully poached your target.
The shot then resolves as an ordinary FIRE.

POACH <creature> (losing the stealth contest)
You see: Just as you move to fire, <creature> notices your poaching attempt!
The shot is still fired, as an ordinary FIRE.

While invisible
You see: You become visible again.

As a Paladin
You see: You feel a strong pang of conscience at this cowardly act.

Refusals
Not hidden or invisible: How can you poach if you are not hidden?
Weapon not loaded: But your <weapon> isn't loaded!
Nothing to fire with: But you don't have a ranged weapon in your hand to fire with!

Game Helpfile

Usage for POACH: This is the ranged version of ambushing and brings you out of hiding when done.
Syntax: POACH (creature). You must be hidden and holding a loaded ranged weapon.

Use

POACH is the ranged counterpart to AMBUSH: a shot taken from concealment, which reveals you whether or not it goes unnoticed. Compare SNIPE, the guild-restricted ability that lets you stay hidden after the shot.

Every requirement of FIRE applies — a ranged weapon in hand, LOADED, and a valid target in range — plus one of its own: you must be hidden or invisible before you begin. Thrown weapons cannot be used. Aiming with AIM works exactly as it does for an ordinary shot. POACH cannot be combined with MANEUVER POWERSHOT.

It is not necessary to STALK the target first, and POACH may be used against any target, including other players.

Mechanics

POACH is a single stealth contest between you and your target, rather than against the whole room, so you only learn from that one target's attempt to see you. The contest is driven by your Stealth against the target's Perception, and the target's Perception is discounted for the purpose, which makes POACH easier to succeed at than an ordinary HIDE.

Winning the contest awards Stealth experience; losing it awards none. Either way you are pulled from hiding and the shot is fired.

Paladins see an extra line of reproach when they poach, and are penalized for the act.
