A variety of spodumene, kunzite is a purple-colored gemstone that gets its color from minor to trace amounts of manganese. Exposure to sunlight can fade the color of kunzite. It can be found as colorless or nearly colorless, pale pink, pink, and pale purple or lilac to dark purple. It may be bicolored with white.

Other varieties of spodumene include pale emerald-green hiddenite and triphane, which is yellowish.
