A type of garnet, pyrope is the only garnet variety to always display red coloration. The origin of most pyrope is ultramafic rocks.

It can be found as blood-red to black red, red, orange-red, and pink. Some have tones of purple to purple-red and chromium rich pyropes will become green when heated.
