The attempt to stand may fail if one is heavily encumbered, exhausted, significantly off balance or gravely wounded. A failed attempt results in a short [[Roundtime|roundtime]]. The difficulty of the attempt is derived from the starting position, e.g. standing from a prone position is harder than standing from a kneeling position. Attempting to {{com|sit}} or {{com|kneel}} before standing can help avoid failing and incurring the roundtime.

Game Helpfile

If you have fallen down, the STAND verb will let you rise back to your feet.
If you are carrying too much, your injuries are too severe, or you have lost
too much balance, you may not succeed. You may also attempt to stand
near another player, which produces fluff messaging only (no real effect).
The messaging for this usage of the verb differs if the person you are standing
next to is your bonded spouse.

Syntax:
  STAND
  STAND <PLAYER>
  STAND <CREATURE>

STAND INFO will provide more detailed examples with sample messages.

Usage

Standing can fail when you are heavily encumbered, exhausted, badly off balance or seriously wounded. A failed attempt leaves you in your current posture and incurs a short roundtime. The failure message identifies burden or poor balance when either prevents the attempt; severe wounds can also produce a warning before the result.

Rising from prone is more difficult than rising from a sitting or kneeling position. Using SIT or KNEEL first can therefore make the following attempt easier.

The basic messages above can be replaced by the room, furniture, vehicle or effect involved. A supported surface may let you step onto it or stand on it, while cramped spaces, moving rides and other special locations can prevent standing entirely. These are properties of the particular location or object rather than additional universal STAND forms.

Stand up before using the targeted forms. An unreachable object or a hidden or invisible target can also prevent the action. The room receives the targeted message only when it can perceive the actor; the target likewise receives the person-directed message only when the actor is perceptible.
