Game Helpfile

Syntax:
    HANGBACK
Allows players to attempt to keep from being engaged.
               Dependant on skill checks.
    HANGBACK STOP
Ends a previously started HANGBACK command.

Usage

HANGBACK remains active until stopped. When another combatant advances, it makes an automatic skill check to move you away and preserve distance. It does not guarantee that you will remain at missile or pole range: an opponent can overcome the attempt and continue closing.

Each failed attempt to hang back incurs roundtime. Repeated failures can therefore leave you with accumulating roundtime while an opponent continues to advance. Manual RETREAT or FLEE may be safer when an automatic attempt is unlikely to succeed.

HANGBACK applies only to your character. A group leader can use GROUP RETREAT to order every member of a group to make a normal retreat attempt; see GROUP.
