Slings do extremely poor damage, but are not penalized by armworn shields. The fact that they primarily do impact damage means that they are sometimes used to generate nonlethal [[stun|stuns]] to expose a target to other attacks. There is little variety in ammunition types, and slings are outclassed in every way by nearly every other ranged weapon, leaving them as primarily a role-playing choice, or a gag weapon.

Sling weapons

There are two weapon classes that fall under this skill:

  • sling
  • staff sling

Neither slings nor staff slings are affected by the presence of an arm-worn shield. Shield use is also not affected.

Slings

A sling is a strip of leather or cloth. This becomes a deadly weapon when someone holds both ends and drops a rock into the loop they make. The weapon is spun once before one end is released, sending the rock flying at deadly speeds.

Slings have a load time time of 2 seconds from in hand, 3 seconds from a pouch/quiver.

Some slings have a load time of 1 second from in hand, 2 seconds from a pouch/quiver.

Staff slings

A staff sling is a long staff with a sling attached to the end, which is used to throw stones. These are currently the only ranged weapons that can PARRY. Staff slings generally appraise the same as slings, but are ten times heavier.

Due to the high weight, dismal damage, and absence of variety in staff slings, their use has been highly neglected except for the purposes of comedy or novelty. Still, staff slings occupy a slowly growing niche--they can parry attacks, something no other ranged weapon can do, and as they allows the wielder to use a shield unimpeded, they have become a viable hunting tool.

Staff slings have a load time of 4 seconds from in hand, 5 seconds from pouch/quiver.

Guild-specific abilities

  • Rangers and Thieves can snipe with both types of sling, allowing them to strike a target without coming out of hiding.
  • Barbarians and Paladins can PARRY ranged attacks with a staff sling, so long as the attacker is at melee range.

Recommended sling weapons

  • All Staff Slings are identical.
  • Old player-crafted slings could have higher balance or suitedness, depending on the template.

Sling ammo

Sling Ammo has been drastically changed with the release of Carving.
