History

Vashir's story began on the 1st day of the 6th month, 377 AL, in a small cabin just outside the city of Riverhaven. The cabin was home to a huntress named Larashar and her husband of just over a year, Kiovan, and on that day their son Vashir was born. Healthy and strong, the newborn's first act in this world was to blindly rake his tiny claws across Larashar's arms as she held him; she laughed at this, saying 'Look at you, little warrior, already fighting. You will be strong.' They named him after Larashar's father, a powerful warrior killed by the undead during the migration east from the Prydaen homeland.

Though the birth went well, minor complications left Larashar unable to hunt for herself for several months. Kiovan grew restless and frustrated in this time, straying further and further from home in his hunts until one day he finally failed to return. His disappearance struck a terrible blow to Larashar, who refused to believe her husband had abandoned her and would spend the rest of her days hoping to be reunited with the man.

In the absence of a provider Larashar forced herself to hunt again, seeking small prey until her injuries were fully healed. Once her recovery was complete she began to devote more time to finding the missing Kiovan, but met with little success.

Years passed and Vashir grew. His mother settled into a comfortable routine, hunting just enough to keep the small family supplied, with any extra money she earned going directly toward finding Kiovan.

At six years old Vashir began to think himself a great hunter, having slain a few of the larger frogs and rodents near his home; in his confidence he started to wander, straying as far away as Riverhaven while his mother was out on a hunt. Overwhelmed at first, Vashir quickly became determined to learn more of city life and of the people he saw who looked so different from him.

Over the next eight years Vashir observed quietly, generally unnoticed, as he slowly built up an understanding of 'eastern life' that far surpassed that of his mother. Of particular interest to the boy were Paladins and soldiers armored in heavy plate; curiosity turned to fascination when, upon meeting one, he was given a metal breastplate and short sword to practice with. Vashir discovered that the armor could protect him far better than his own skin, and the blade put his claws to shame - from that moment on he dedicated most of his time to practicing with these marvelous new tools, hunting ship's rats and salt crabs in the nearby salt yard for no other purpose than to hone his skills. Though worried by this untraditional behavior, Larashar found she could do little to prevent it and instead decided to support his newfound love of fighting.

In the year 392 Larashar's tireless searching finally paid off. A reliable source put her long-lost husband's location somewhere in the vicinity of Rivercrossing, not only alive but doing quite well for himself as a professional Thief and con artist. Relieved and furious at the same time, Larashar signed on as a guard for a southbound trader caravan, deciding that following an experienced trader would be quicker than trying to find the way to Crossing on her own. Vashir decided to travel with her, hoping for a chance to question the man who had abandoned him so long ago.

Unfortunately, the caravan proved too tempting a target for local Thieves to resist. A small group of thugs ambushed them as they left Kaerna, overpowering the trader and his guards almost instantly; Larashar shoved her son aside, telling him to hide before engaging the attackers, only to be stabbed through the back by a grinning elf and left to bleed while they made off with the loot. Vashir blames himself for her death, believing that if he'd fought instead of hiding they might have stood a chance. To this day he never hides in combat.

Vashir rarely talks about the events that followed this loss, but claims to have met his father and discovered 'just how much of a scumbag he really is'. Kiovan was found drunk and beaten senseless outside the Empath Guild the following morning.

Fifteen years old and alone in a strange city, Vashir turned to one place he felt might accept him: the Paladin Guild. He arrived with high hopes, thinking his belief in justice a talent with a blade would be enough to gain entry; however, his refusal to worship eastern gods coupled with his love of fighting and tendency toward uneccessary violence earned him rejection from the guild.

Angry and frustrated, Vashir wandered the streets, eventually winding up in the Middens where a group of local louts surrounded him. Violence ensued as Vashir decided to take out his rage on the muggers, drawing his blade and laying into them with almost inhuman ferocity.

In the midst of the fighting a dark figure appeared at the end of the street, watching silently until the last thug dropped to the ground. Vashir scarcely had time to catch his breath before the newcomer stepped forward.

"What is your name?" the stranger asked. Vashir told him.

"I think I can help you, Vashir. Come with me."

Vashir followed the man back into town, suspicious yet curious, until finally they arrived at a large set of doors - their apparent destination. The man turned to face Vashir and said, "I have a feeling you will do well here."

Confused, Vashir began to ask what the man meant, but before he could finish his question a moongate blazed into life and the stranger stepped through, vanishing as quickly as he'd come.

Vashir shrugged and, with nothing else to do, stepped through the door before him and into the future waiting beyond.

"So you want to be a Barbarian..."

Other Info

Though highly independent by nature, Vashir met and soon fell in love with Silvwyn Atdziri, a Rakash Barbarian, during his training in Ratha. The two held a strong relationship for several months before becoming engaged in Shard's Temple of Light just after the outbreak of the war with Lyras, and were later bonded on the 13th day of the 4th month of Shorka the Cobra in the year of the Golden Panther, 394.
