Description: Rite of Contrition builds on the magician's earlier knowledge of creating fields of psychic corruption, taking a turn toward the mystical. Where previous fields focused on affecting the physical senses of those around the Necromancer, Rite of Contrition subverts their supernatural senses.

While the spell is held, the magician can hide any necromantic corruption in his body. The more power fed into the spell, the more corruption can be washed away. This affects attempts to perceive the Necromancer's taint, but does nothing to defend against attempts to exploit it: a Moon Mage can be fooled, Harm Evil cannot.

Finally, the spell matrix is designed to react poorly to the presence of Transcendental Necromancy spells, to aid in the magician's display of contrition. While in use, the Rite of Contrition will dispel any active transcendental mutation. Before you can learn this spell, you must know Philosopher's Preservation and Eyes of the Blind.

Effect: Unknown
Example Messaging: Cast: You weave a field of sublime corruption, concealing the scars in your aura under a layer of magical pretense.

Ending: The Rite of Contrition matrix loses cohesion, leaving your aura naked to those who can see such things.

Recast:The spell matrix fails to cohere on top of an already existing version of itself. Unlike the priests, there's limits to how ostentatiously you can pretend to be contrite.

Devices/Tattoos: No devices or tattoos documented.

Notes

Rite of Contrition is a Held Mana spell that is designed to hinder supernatural attempts to identify a Necromancer for what he is.

  • While held, the spell reduces your effective Divine Outrage for purposes of detection. This does not affect your status as a cursed being, only the ability of other PCs to observe this. Among others, this changes: Moon Mage and Cleric PERCEIVE, Empath TOUCH, the appearance of your Analogous Patterns spells, and any other system current or future that asks "Can I tell he's a Necromancer?" in the correct manner. This does not affect your vulnerabilities if someone already knows you are a Necromancer. For example, if you have enough Divine Outrage to get hit by Harm Evil, ROC will not stop it from happening. The amount of Divine Outrage mitigated is directly related to the amount of mana you are holding.
  • If ROC is active and your Divine Outrage (after ROC's modification) is low enough to appear normal, a number of other small things happen to obscure blatant tells that Moon Mage and Cleric PERCEIVE still might have picked up on. The contents of this is PAFO for now. This does not work if your Divine Outrage is high enough to be detected as an Arcane magic user/cursed soul.
  • ROC rapidly dispels any Transcendental Necromancy buff that you have active prior to casting it, and will periodically continue to remove them if for some reason you manage to get one on while still holding the spell.
  • Due to how things work right now, ROC currently allow Empaths to heal/link/shift Necromancers that exceed the normal Divine Outrage limits. THIS IS ONLY TEMPORARY while certain updates to healing and shock are finalized. Empaths and Necromancers should not get used to working together; it will be bad for both their healths.
  • Stops the growth of the accuse success modifier while in a justice zone. Accuse can still succeed, but time spent in town will not increase the chances while ROC is up.

When the spell no longer can hide your corruption due to held mana seepage, you will receive the message, "The Rite of Contrition matrix loses some of its hold on your senses. You feel a wave of filth wash over you, heralding the renewed health of your internal gauges."

When enough mana is harnessed to rehide your corruption you recieve the message, "The Rite of Contrition matrix redoubles its hold on your senses. Joyous corruption seeps into your mind from your own spell, muting your unconscious sense of shame."
