Hanryu is correct. Backstabs and ambushes ALWAYS contest Evasion at the least, and may contest other defenses depending on the backstab vs perception contest. I'm not going to say I think the 'backstab' ability right now has a balanced contest at upper levels of backstab skill, but it still does check defense(s). -Z
