The fabric, along with wolfwind leather, was first introduced to Ilithi’s markets by the reclusive artisan Saerith Valeweft, whose work favors architectural tailoring over ornamentation. Cultivated from frost-hardened alpine flax and harvested only after the deep winter freeze, the fibers are drawn taut by cold before weaving, a method that produces the material's characteristic structure. Garments fashioned from nightfrost linen are often finished with narrow frost-pale seamwork tracing the structure of the piece in deliberate contrast to the darker weave, a technique now known as wintertrace seams/binding/stitching. Only skilled seamstresses are able to perfect a wintertrace binding.

Common Description

A tightly woven, storm-dark cloth with a matte surface and a firm, structured drape. Its coloration ranges through storm-slate, iron-grey, and blue-black, absorbing light rather than reflecting it. Faint pale striations run along the grain, reminiscent of wind-driven frost across stone. The texture is slightly coarse to the touch, durable, and depth-rich, with no shimmer or sheen.
