Demantoid garnet is a green gemstone variety of the mineral andradite, a member of the garnet group of minerals. The green coloration is caused by chromium. Demantoid garnet has a misnomer olivine (peridot). It is highly refractive, which is atypical for garnets.
Primarily green, the exact shade ranges from a very strong yellowish green to nearly the color of a fine emerald. Some stones have a brownish cast, due to iron. The dispersion is unusually high and is often visible as "fire" (rainbow-colored flashes of light) although in some cases, the green color can render this effect less noticeable. More intense greens are generally highly valued, but lighter stones of yellowish-green display substantially more fire.
Demantoid garnet often contains inclusions of chrysotile, which radiate out from a very small crystal of chromite and appear as feathery golden threads that tend to curve and resemble the tail of a horse and are therefore referred to as horsetail inclusions. Such inclusions can only be found in demantoid and can be regarded as desirable features.
In Elanthia, demantoid garnet has been described as being a softly green gemstone with distinctive fibrous inclusions resembling horse-tails.
