Emerald is a gemstone and variety of beryl that is colored green by trace amounts of chromium. Emeralds occur in hues ranging from yellow-green to blue-green with the primary hue being green -- yellow and blue are the secondary hues found. Only gems that are medium to dark in tone are considered emeralds. Light-toned gems are instead called green beryl. A "fine" emerald is saturated in color and has a bright, vivid hue. The saturation modifier or mask normally found in emeralds is gray, which gives a grayish-green or dull-green hue.
