Item Catagory?

Having done some major work on items, it occurs to me that some of the searching and name issues (such as those juggling items called "wolf spiders") could be solved by having a dedicated category for items. Any thoughts? -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 17:11, 3 June 2008 (CDT)

Veyne

You might want to take a peek at this. I may have overstepped my authority, but this looks like a problem just waiting to happen. I couldn't find any precedent on it, so I thought I should lock it till it could be discussed.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 03:58, 8 June 2008 (CDT)

Forms

I've done everything I can with the knowledge I have of forms right now. Where can I find more info? I can't seem to find anything. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 19:39, 11 June 2008 (CDT)

Semantic Forms --Naeya (talk) 20:07, 11 June 2008 (CDT)

Major Changes

I'd like permission to do two things: 1) Move all items to Item/Armor/Shield/Weapon namespaces (I'll take care of the work and links) and 2) Implimenting semantic wiki "tagging" via templates. The sooner you get back to me, the better. I've got a week till I start working IRL. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 04:48, 12 June 2008 (CDT)

Hmm ok, so you want four new namespaces created: Item, Armor, Shield and Weapon (which I'll have to do via the server). I'll also need to get the server admin to run a few maintenance scripts on it after we've made those.--Naeya (talk) 09:38, 12 June 2008 (CDT)
Done.--Naeya (talk) 17:13, 12 June 2008 (CDT)
The semantic wiki stuff doesn't seem to be functioning in anything in the new namespaces. Any clue? -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 23:42, 12 June 2008 (CDT)
No idea. How exactly aren't they funcitoning? Might needta read up on Semantic MediaWiki when using custom namespaces (IE you will since you're neck deep in this stuff atm) Then let me know what changes I need to make. Sorry to kinda leave you high and dry but I don't have time to get embroiled in that stuff atm due to RL.--Naeya (talk) 09:04, 13 June 2008 (CDT)

Possible Fix for Semantic Failure and Question

I ran across this in the admin docs, it may be what's wrong:

(3) Perhaps Adjust namespaces. Semantic MediaWiki uses six additional custom namespaces. By default their indices start at 100. If you have added your own custom namespaces, then
you have to set the variable $smwgNamespaceIndex in LocalSettings.php before including SMW_Settings.php. See the documentation in SMW_Settings.php for details. If you add more
namespaces later on, then you have to assign them to higher index numbers than those used by Semantic MediaWiki.

Semantic MediaWiki only evaluates semantic annotations in some namespaces. For example, by default it ignores semantic annotations in talk pages. If you want to change the
namespaces with annotations (likely if you have added your own custom namespaces), then you have to change the array variable $smwgNamespacesWithSemanticLinks in SMW_Settings.php.

There also seems to be an issue with the semantic search. Since you didn't mention it so far, I wanted to make sure that it was enabled, linked, tuned, polished, put up on blocks, and properly licensed with the appropriate government organizations, before I started complaining about doom and server failure. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 14:56, 13 June 2008 (CDT)

Well I started the indices at 108 (after the last namespace added "Form - 107"), so I don't think it's an index problem. I'll hafta look into semantic search in a bit I guess.--Naeya (talk) 15:09, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
Is the whole array variable doodad updated and paid for?-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 15:28, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
The what?--Naeya (talk) 15:54, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
Check the second paragraph that I posted. It says something about changing the array variable $smwgNamespacesWithSemanticLinks in SMW_Settings.php if you want annotations to be active in new namespaces.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 16:13, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
Alright, I'll do that.--Naeya (talk) 16:25, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
BINGO! It's working. And that's why you're the boss.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 16:38, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
Nevermind, I'm an idiot and was looking in the wrong namespace.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 16:44, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
LOL I was fixin to say, I didn't do anything yet! So everything is peachy now?--Naeya (talk) 16:47, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
Nope. No change that I can see.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 17:13, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
I freely admit I have no real idea, but would this page help?-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 18:18, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
I just read over our past conversations, and it looks like I was less than clear. No it's not working, I thought it was but I looked in the wrong namespace. See? Clear as an iron curtain.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 18:33, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
Okay.....here's something to make things even wierder. I did a search by property and successfully got 3 items out of the tons I should have gotten...but get this, two of them were in them Item namespace...... It looks like the issue may not be that it's not tracking the new namespaces but that it's just not showing the little factbox thing in them....I'm so confused!!!!-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 18:38, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
You probably need to wait. The job-queue is pretty big as of my posting right now. Special:Statistics--Naeya (talk) 18:42, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
No dice. job-queue 0, still working only strangely.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 19:32, 13 June 2008 (CDT)

Can you show me exactly how to reproduce this problem? As I have no idea where to even begin to fix it now. Should we just nuke the namespaces and stick to the Main namespace?--Naeya (talk) 19:47, 13 June 2008 (CDT)

Okay, basically here's the symptoms: Items, when in the normal namespace, when edited acquire their proper Template defined semantic properties. They even retain these once moved. However, once moved, they no longer pick up new ones....despite having the exact same template that assigns semantic qualities in the exact same way. However, even if they propertly retain their semantic properties, the semantic overlay (the factbox at the bottom, any warning notes within the body, etc) fails to appear. So ya..... I'd just like to say for posterities sake, I blame you, President Nixon and the Orange Growers of America.....but I won't say for what. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 20:00, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
LOL Well with all your fiddlings, you know more about Semantic MediaWiki than I do... hmm so I really don't know. Eep? Was there anything mentioned over at the SM site about this kinda of error?--Naeya (talk) 20:19, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
Okay, without having access to the code I'm somewhat limited in my guesses, but I ran across two other people having the same problem in their "forum." 1 and 2. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 17:25, 14 June 2008 (CDT)
Hey, Caraamon. I added all the custom namespaces to that SMW_Settings.php file. It seems that the fact boxes still aren't appearing on the other namespace pages though. And those links above for the other two people reporting problems. Does the semantic search work for the namespaces now though?--Naeya (talk) 19:17, 19 June 2008 (CDT)

Error Error, Weapon's Can't Talk!

We've got another issue, but HOPEFULLY this will be easy. Right now, the wiki thinks the Weapon namespace is the talk namespace for the Shield category. :P -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 20:00, 13 June 2008 (CDT)

Was a problem on my end, fixed now. You'll need to move those weapons back to the Weapon namespace (I moved them out, if I hadn't they'd have been lost).--Naeya (talk) 20:17, 13 June 2008 (CDT)
Hmmm, you might have bumped something while you were at it. When I attempt to edit using the weapon form I get the following response:
Catchable fatal error: Argument 1 passed to SMWDataValueFactory::getPropertyObjectTypeID() must be an instance of Title, null given, called
in /usr/home/elanthia/public_html/w/extensions/SemanticMediaWiki/includes/storage/SMW_SQLStore.php on line 225 and defined
in /usr/home/elanthia/public_html/w/extensions/SemanticMediaWiki/includes/SMW_DataValueFactory.php on line 193
No idea what that means. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 02:38, 15 June 2008 (CDT)
Neither do I, and no it wasn't something I did. Namespaces have nothing to do with the SMW extension files. I think we're both out of our depth with this. I'm sorry but I really don't have the time right now to mess with SMW.--Naeya (talk) 02:50, 15 June 2008 (CDT)

Confusion About Individual Anatomy Charts

Hey, I've been trying to set them up to say how much they cost, what scholarship they need, ect on each page and there's a blank template on the page but I'm having trouble filling it in. Is there somewhere on the site I can read up about this?

First off, please don't move all items out of the Item: namespace (which is what you're doing). I could understand it for the herbs (but they'll probably end up being moved back). However, they're called Item:Blah blah blah for a purpose. I'll have to take a look at those charts + the Item template and see what's in store. I'll ask Caraamon how he wants those handed, but yes, please stop redirecting Item: pages to a none Item: namespace page. I know you didn't know, but we're trying to keep all items with the Item: prefix.--Naeya (talk) 09:00, 27 June 2008 (CDT)

OK, please undo all the moves (if you can). If not, I'll do it for you. Then click on Edit with form above the article (to the left of the normal Edit tab). This is where you enter all your information, see how I did Item:Silver leucro anatomy chart for more info. --Naeya (talk) 09:05, 27 June 2008 (CDT)

Oh and I don't mean to sound harsh at all! I just woke up! :) To explain the above, we're in the middle of moving items TO the Item: prefix (called a namespace). So redirecting FROM that namespace wouldn't be good :) We've also set up Forms to help with item entry, so when you Edit with Form, it's much easier for those unfamiliar (and even those with some wiki knowledge as you say you are).--Naeya (talk) 09:16, 27 June 2008 (CDT)

Ok, I'll set them to redirect to the Item: (thing) entries if someone hasn't beaten me to it yet.--Zamara 17:34, 27 June 2008 (CDT)

You should be able to Move them, easier and it keeps all the history. --Naeya (talk) 17:43, 27 June 2008 (CDT)
Well I'm see on the one you did, if you search for anything under the Item: prefix they don't come up (I tried Silver Leucro chart) so I want to make them under the correct place, but those don't seem to be searchable, so I was going to use the old ones to redirect to the correct ones. I guess I'll move them and then make the old one, and have it redirect to the new one?--Zamara 18:04, 27 June 2008 (CDT)
I just did a search in the Item namespace and Silver Leucro anatomy chart came up just fine. All you have to do is MOVE them to the Item: namespace (ie click Move and type Item: in front of the name), and it will automatically make the old place a redirect. Basically saves you a step or two, AND retains the history. This is the preferred method. Does this make sense? .--Naeya (talk) 18:15, 27 June 2008 (CDT)
I'm gonna try it on a few of them, the search is working now, I dunno maybe I miss typed it before. --Zamara 18:23, 27 June 2008 (CDT)

Forms for adding stuff to the wiki

where's the place to find them?(or do they have there own place yet?)((example form:item) --Legeres 17:25, 12 July 2008 (CDT)

No place yet. --Naeya (talk) 18:52, 12 July 2008 (CDT)
okay let me know when there is one--Legeres 01:13, 13 July 2008 (CDT)
You can use the form creation thingie in the Special Pages section. Or you can post on my Talk page if you want one made and don't have the time or expertise. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 04:14, 14 July 2008 (CDT)
I think he meant something like this :) User:Naeya/Sandbox--Naeya (talk) 09:38, 14 July 2008 (CDT)
Try going here -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 14:34, 14 July 2008 (CDT)
That's all well and good, but the list I made actually puts them in the proper namespace without people having to remember to put Item: or Armor: etc in front of the page title.--Naeya (talk) 14:55, 14 July 2008 (CDT)

Hey, i'm back.. after a long break...

Well i finally have internet access again.(long story) So I'm back after 5 months or so, and I'm sure a lot has changed... any hot projects you are looking for someone to take up? --Rawkus 11:15, 16 July 2008 (CDT)

Nothing right off the top of my head, though we are in the process of moving Items to the Item: namespace and fixing the templates. Can take a look at those if you want.--Naeya (talk) 11:42, 16 July 2008 (CDT)

Titles....ew

I'm going to TRY and adapt the titles to semanticwiki's dynamic form generation so as to make some of the category pages a little easier to maintain... but I have no idea if it'll work. Check the Perception skill page, down at the bottom with the juggling items to see what I'm trying to do. Lemmie know what you think. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 01:26, 15 August 2008 (CDT)

Ok, that's a great idea, because the load time on the pages currently with all the includes are horrible. LOL After this, I'd like to hit the Bestiary *groans* It needs to be done. Semantic Wiki will help LOADS with that, and if we add caps to the individual pages, the Bestiary level list can be made just like that juggling items, aye?--Naeya (talk) 09:57, 15 August 2008 (CDT)
In theory..... we'll just have to see how messy it is in actual practice. Here's hoping. I'll work out the bugs with the simpler titles, then try bestiary once I've nailed it down. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 15:33, 15 August 2008 (CDT)
In regards to the bestiary stuff, take a look at the notes I made here --Naeya (talk) 16:38, 15 August 2008 (CDT)
Okay, go here and tell me if this is what you envisioned, ignoring for now the formatting. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 18:02, 15 August 2008 (CDT)
Hey, that's pretty swift. Make it happen! :D Oh and let me know if you need any help.--Naeya (talk) 21:57, 15 August 2008 (CDT)
I've been changing some of the titles over to use the TitleReq template instead of the extra pipes in the Title template. Should I undo what I've done, so that other pages can be changed to match Barbarian Titles? FuIru 19:41, 18 November 2008 (UTC)
That's more of a question for Caraamon.--Naeya (talk) 19:50, 18 November 2008 (UTC)

Redlink Directing

Check here and lemmie know, please. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 01:30, 20 August 2008 (CDT)

Okay, I have to put in a few more minor things, but after that it should work for MOST things. If you see something that isn't, poke me on my user page and I'll look into it. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 18:00, 20 August 2008 (CDT)

Outcast

can we get a new catagory added to the npc's and pc's that will allow me to identify them as members of the outcast tribes?Alexii 13:26, 16 September 2008 (CDT)

For NPCs, you can enter that as one of the Types and throw in at the bottom. PCs you can still use the Category link, but an addition to the Template for Order/Clan type info might be handy.
-Glimmereyes 15:44, 16 September 2008 (CDT)
Done. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 00:59, 17 September 2008 (CDT)

Titles

I have to admit, they're starting to tick me off. What do you think about moving them to their own namespace? I'm tired of having to filter them out of searches manually. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 19:24, 12 October 2008 (CDT)

That would be a huge and tedious project. I guess we can do that. --Naeya (talk) 19:48, 12 October 2008 (CDT)
It would be, but no worse than the item conversion was. And the sooner we do it (if we do it) the easier it will be. I dunno, it's up to you as the owner whether that's the style you want. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 23:45, 12 October 2008 (CDT)
Do you still want a Title namespace, while I'm digging through this stuff? --Naeya (talk) 19:05, 31 October 2008 (CDT)

Versions

Seems we're behind on both the new versions of Semantic Forms and Semantic MediWiki. If you have a spare moment, could you upgrade? I think it might fix some problems I'm having with some of the forms. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 15:39, 31 October 2008 (CDT)

Sure I'll do some upgrades across the board.--Naeya (talk) 16:06, 31 October 2008 (CDT)
Ok those major extensions are updated.--Naeya (talk) 16:14, 31 October 2008 (CDT)

I haven't been keeping up with the MediaWiki releases. Do you think it would behoove us to upgrade to 1.13?--Naeya (talk) 16:16, 31 October 2008 (CDT)

As long as it doesn't cause something to explode, catch on fire, or require tech support, probably.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 16:42, 31 October 2008 (CDT)
The update seems to have broken some stuff. I'll fix it asap.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 17:05, 31 October 2008 (CDT)
Let me know if there's anything I need to do on my end.--Naeya (talk) 17:10, 31 October 2008 (CDT)
Looks like the factboxes have been disabled, could you look into that? -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 18:04, 31 October 2008 (CDT)
I could...not sure where to begin looking. I haven't dug into this stuff in months. All I did on the upgrade was overwrite the files with the new ones and reinitialize SMW (as was instructed). Hmm..--Naeya (talk) 18:05, 31 October 2008 (CDT)
OK found it. In the newest version of SMW, the Factbox is off by default. I turned it back on.--Naeya (talk) 19:04, 31 October 2008 (CDT)
Oh crappola. I overwrote the old SMW_Settings.php... I'll need to fix it again for Namespaces.--Naeya (talk) 19:08, 31 October 2008 (CDT)
Welp, unless you do decide to update MediaWiki, I need you to redo this:[3] -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 10:20, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
The edit was still in place in Linker.php (oddly). I do plan on upgrading to 1.13 but I was going to wait til after the rush of edits from the fest.--Naeya (talk) 10:23, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
Okay, edit with form is working again, but the item/weapon/armor/etc namespaces still aren't using factboxes or properties. Hope you enjoy this sort of thing, cause I'm about ready to strangle a goblin. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 12:13, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
I re-added the namespaces to the SMW settings, I might have had it wrong before, it's been a LONG time since I last edited that file... umm did I screw it up to make "Osgeth's" factbox appear at the top of every page?--Naeya (talk) 13:51, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
Seems to be fine now... I think. Thanks. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 14:02, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
Okay, still can't get the redlink to default to the correct forms. Can you check the linker once more? -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 14:14, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
I double checked. The code is in place. This will have to wait until I upgrade the entire wiki. I'll probably do that before the end of the weekend, if I can find a lull in the activity.--Naeya (talk) 15:00, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
I think I may have found a problem. Can you check and make sure the namespaces exist? Take a look at Item:Branded_leather_wristwrap_with_braided_straps. There's a wierd reference to "concept" at the bottom that I don't get. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 15:46, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
They exists... check out Special:Search. However.. I think that the new version of SMF includes "Concepts" and it might have overwritten the namespace 108 (Item). Let me take a look. --Naeya (talk) 15:49, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
Yup, that's exactly what happened. Give me a few to sort it out. I don't want to have to move them all from Concept: to Item. --Naeya (talk) 15:52, 1 November 2008 (CDT)

I've checked and double checked the includes and such. I have no idea why the factbox isn't working.--Naeya (talk) 16:26, 1 November 2008 (CDT)

Oh boy. All the items have been moved to the Concept namespace. That's gonna take a bit to fix. As for the fact box, um. As I recall, last time this happened it was because of the numbers that were assigned. Maybe? -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 16:32, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
I'm running some Semantic repairs if you notice the site sluggish. --Naeya (talk) 16:42, 1 November 2008 (CDT)

I'm probably going to run the update on MediaWiki (to 1.13.2) VERY soon. I just don't want to do it in the middle of the day on a weekend while people are using it for the fest.--Naeya (talk) 16:58, 1 November 2008 (CDT)

Lemmie know if and what I can do to help.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 17:39, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
I'm still not sure if I have the namespaces setup correctly in the SMW_Settings.php and I can't find anything that just doesn't say "add to the array". Meh I'm mad at myself for overwriting it. It's been so long, I forgot all the files I had customized.--Naeya (talk) 17:44, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
Hate to be a killjoy, but the factboxes for the namespaces are still gone. :P -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 18:22, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
How come this one shows? Weapon:Acid-etched_steel_horseshoe_stamped_with_the_crest_of_the_paladins'_guild
WHOOO!!! Now one last problem and it'll be a good day. I can't make redlinks edit by form. Any clue?-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 18:32, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
That I have no clue. If anything it will be fixed when I upgrade to 1.13.2 on Monday.--Naeya (talk) 18:39, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
Well this is interesting, the Item namespace has its redlinks connected correctly, but it seems weapons, shield and armor don't. -Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 19:01, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
I have a feeling the update to SMW screwed us. I didn't think they added any new namespaces. *le sigh* I'm going to test with Shield as I don't think it's as big as the other two.--Naeya (talk) 19:07, 1 November 2008 (CDT)
Well, either you or someone else fixed it. Congrats and thanks.-Caraamon Strugr-Makdasi(talk) 00:27, 2 November 2008 (CDT)

New Articles

Ah! I'm new to the Wiki scene, so still figuring out how to navigate this "talk" concept. No, those articles I'm posting aren't my own works; they were written by GameMaster Armifer, and are referenced on his GM page in Elanthipedia. I'm actually in the process of uploading all his works that I can find, so I haven't properly attributed them on the pages I'm posting yet... but I will. ;-)

Ok. Just a note - it's customary to continue talk conversations on the page they were started. And make sure to sign your talk posts (the signature button in the edit button window). Thanks! --Naeya (talk) 21:13, 1 November 2008 (CDT)

Search Functionality

With the segreating of items, weapons, armor, etc. into their own categories away from the Main section, do you think it would be possible to include those categories in the default search settings? It drastically reduces the search functionality for the casual user if a cursory search doesn't turn up what they're looking for. --Thilan 05:44, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

I've set the default search namespaces to include all the new ones we've added. However, the maintenance script I tried to run to fix all existing users has failed several times to work, and I'm not sure what the problem is. All my other scripts have worked. Until I get the patch on user options to work, I will put up a big SEARCH HOWTO that tells people to change their Search preferences in their preferences area to include the other namespaces.--Naeya (talk) 15:11, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

re: GoogleSearch

Just to forewarn you (if you haven't already heard stuff like this), you might get mixed results from this. GoogleSearch seems to be based on your site score or somesuch, so if you get too popular more and more "unrelated junk" will appear (ie, references to Elanthipedia from, say, play.net posts).

Zuggsoft.com tried to use GoogleSearch for an easy and powerful way to scan through their website/forums, but the results returned proved to be largely unuseful to the point that few people used it at all (luckily, the forums had a search feature of its own).--Symphaena 23:01, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. Like I said, tis an experiment :)--Naeya (talk) 23:05, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
Is it possible to put the google search below the elanthipedia search? I keep trying to search elanthipedia with it. --Ysselt 19:08, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
That's the point, but sure I'll move it.--Naeya (talk) 20:07, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Is there a way to default it to submit the search with "site:www.elanthipedia.com" appended to each search? then it will only search for whatever is being searched within the elanthipedia domain. --Bromus 08:12, 9 November 2008 (UTC)
It should be already defaulted to that. It was when I set it up.--Naeya (talk) 15:11, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Shop Prices

I'm trying to learn to edit and I'm confining myself to the Crossing Trader Shop. I can't seem to figure out how to get prices to display for the items in the store. Any advice? Dinran (Sorry, don't know how to do the cool blue link to mah name)

No worries. For future reference, you can use the signature button in the editing buttons toolbar (File:Button sig.jpg) or just type 4 tildes ~~~~.
To answer your question, Edit the shop page, go to the ShopItem line for the item you want to add the price to, and add the numerical value for the price after the last |
Example

And if you mean on individual item pages, as I see you made an edit to Item:Jade turtles, just add the number and the currency (as the form asks). So like 2000 Kronars.--Naeya (talk) 14:05, 2 December 2008 (UTC)
