Go command
| Moves through a named portal such as a door, gate or trail, with requirements and messages that vary by portal. |
| GO <portal> You see: You walk through the door. Common refusals |
Syntax
- GO <PORTAL>
- Move through a named portal such as a door, arch, gate, trail or opening.
Usage
GO does not take a compass direction. Ordinary directional movement is typed on its own, as NORTH, NE, UP, DOWN or OUT; GO NORTHEAST answers "What were you referring to?"
The movement message for a named portal comes from that portal. Depending on how the exit is described, you may go through, enter, cross, climb or use another location-specific form of movement. Custom portals can also impose their own requirements, delays and messages.
Some portals require CLIMB instead and return "You will have to climb that." or "You'll have to climb that." Use CLIMB <PORTAL> when instructed. Water and other special locations can provide their own movement behavior; use SWIM where swimming is required.
A non-portal item can respond to GO when that particular item defines its own behavior. Ordinary carried, worn, held and ground items are not destinations merely because they can be named.
Ordinary movement requires you to be standing and able to leave. Combat engagement, death, sitting, kneeling, lying down, movement-preventing effects and an item placed at your feet can stop the attempt. A room, portal or destination may add or replace these checks with its own rules.
If you are hidden, moving brings you out of hiding unless AUTOSNEAK is active. Use SNEAK for deliberate hidden travel.
