Cast
Releases a prepared spell, optionally directing it at a specific target or selecting which targets an area-of-effect spell will affect.
CAST without a prepared spell You see: You don't have a spell prepared! CAST — complete failure You see: Currently lacking the skill to complete the pattern, your spell fails completely. CAST — mental fatigue You see: You strain, but are too mentally fatigued to finish the pattern, and it slips away. CAST — backfire You see: Your spell barely backfires. You see: Your spell backfires somewhat. CAST <target> — invalid self-target You see: You can't cast that at yourself!

Syntax

• CAST

Releases the prepared spell without an explicit target. For a harmful area-of-effect spell, the targets are chosen according to the caster's TOGGLE AOE setting. Most beneficial area-of-effect spells default to the caster's group.

• CAST <TARGET>

Releases the prepared spell at the specified person, creature or object, if that spell accepts such a target.

• CAST SELF

Restricts a beneficial group spell to the caster alone.

• CAST GROUP

Directs a beneficial group spell at the caster's group. This is the default for most such spells.

• CAST AREA

Directs an area-of-effect spell at eligible targets throughout the room, including players. For a beneficial group spell, this requires the Area Casting feat. It does not make a single-target spell affect the room.

• CAST ENGAGED

Directs a harmful area-of-effect spell at players and creatures engaged in combat with the caster.

• CAST CREATURES

Directs a harmful area-of-effect spell at hostile creatures in the room without targeting players.

• CAST ALL

Directs a harmful area-of-effect spell at all eligible targets in the room, including players.

• CAST NONGROUP

Directs a harmful area-of-effect spell at players outside the caster's group and creatures hostile to the caster.

• CAST SUPPORT

Directs a harmful area-of-effect spell at players and creatures engaged with the last ally the caster recently SUPPORTed in the same room. If that ally cannot be found, the spell uses ENGAGED targeting.

Notes

• The spell must first be prepared, usually with PREPARE. Messaging and effects from a successful cast depend on the spell.
• For targeted area-of-effect spells, select AREA, ENGAGED, CREATURES, ALL, NONGROUP or SUPPORT with the TARGET command rather than CAST.
• TOGGLE AOE sets the default targeting option for harmful area-of-effect spells when CAST is used without an explicit option. NONGROUP can be selected as a default; SUPPORT cannot.
