| Move to an adjacent room or through a portal while staying hidden. You must already be hidden or invisible, and anyone in either room may spot you with their Perception. |
| SNEAK <direction> You see: You sneak <direction>... SNEAK <portal> Failures |
Syntax
- SNEAK <DIRECTION>
- Move quietly to the adjacent room in that direction. Accepts the usual compass directions, along with UP, DOWN and OUT. A bare SNEAK, or one given something that is neither a direction nor a portal, answers In which direction are you trying to sneak?
- SNEAK <PORTAL>
- Move quietly through a named portal, the stealthy equivalent of GO. SNEAK GO <PORTAL> works as well.
- SNEAK CLIMB <PORTAL>
- Climb a portal while sneaking. A portal that has to be climbed refuses a plain SNEAK with You think about sneaking but realize you'll have to climb that.
- SNEAK SWIM <DIRECTION>
- Swim in that direction while sneaking.
Notes
- You must already be hidden or invisible. Sneaking will not hide you first, and attempting it while visible gives Sneaking is an inherently stealthy endeavor, try being out of sight. Some abilities let you drop into hiding and sneak in a single action, which shows You quickly slip into hiding to prepare to sneak.
- Sneaking carries a roundtime of a few seconds. It is shortest for Thieves and Rangers moving through the terrain their guild favors, and shrinks further with high Stealth skill.
- Everyone in both the room you leave and the room you enter gets a chance to spot you, weighed against your Stealth. Those who fail see nothing; those who succeed watch you leave and can point you out of hiding.
- Success teaches Stealth. The closer the contest, the larger the award — beating a difficult observer teaches far more than slipping past someone who never had a chance — and repeatedly sneaking past the same person or creature quickly stops teaching.
- Items dropped at your feet block sneaking entirely: You find yourself unable to sneak with items at your feet.
- You cannot sneak into a room that does not permit hiding, and some portals and areas refuse sneaking on their own.
- Sneaking does not work in the water: SNEAK <DIRECTION> there answers You can't do that here. With AUTOSNEAK switched on this also blocks ordinary movement, since the plain direction is sent as a sneak and draws the same refusal.
- AUTOSNEAK converts ordinary directional movement into SNEAK whenever you are hidden, rather than unhiding you.
