Grapple
Tactical combat maneuver that attempts to lock an opponent into a grapple, restricting what both of you can do. It is extremely unbalancing to attempt.
Unknown

The GRAPPLE command attempts to seize hold of an opponent and enter grapple mode. Grappling restricts which maneuvers and weapons either party can use, and a skilled grappler can deny an enemy the use of their weapon while still freely using their own. It is believed to impose a defensive penalty on both parties.

Syntax

  • GRAPPLE
Grapple the enemy you are facing.
  • GRAPPLE <target>
Grapple the indicated enemy.

Detailed Information

Grapple is a tactical maneuver.
Grapple tends to be a somewhat fatiguing maneuver. Attacking again too soon can make this worse.
Grapple tends to be extremely unbalancing.
Grapple is a reasonably paced maneuver, but heavy or unbalanced weapons can slow the attack further.
Grapple is more accurate than most maneuvers, and is equally suited to puncture, slice, and impact weapons.
Grapple temporarily penalizes all defenses, but is equally suited to evasion, parry, and shield defenses.

Breaking a Grapple

SHOVE and RETREAT are the ways out of a grapple. Shove relies on strength and stamina; retreat relies on reflex and agility.

If you SHOVE someone whose last maneuver was SHOVE, the grapple should always break. Remember, last maneuver is very short lived now, so your window is only a couple seconds.

Unresolved Bugs

This attack can fail due to the attacker far outclassing the target, in what is believed to be a rollover bug. Whatever the cause, the GMs are aware of it and it is slated to be fixed by the large upcoming combat rewrite.

Notes

  • Grapple is the most unbalancing maneuver in the game to attempt, so it is normally used from high balance.
  • THRUST, LUNGE, KICK, BOB and WEAVE cannot be used while grappled, and DRAW is locked out as well. JAB and CHOP remain available.
