A tropical tree often described as "weeping bloodwood", the name does not refer to the color of the wood (which is usually a pale brown with a slight reddish tint) but because when wounded or scarred, the bloodwood tree produces a tree gum that looks very similar to freshly spilled blood. This gum hardens quickly and retains its color, giving a bloodwood tree a permanent stained appearance.
