Hi folks!

It's Tuesday, so strike team is reporting in! This week, Haros brings us a port of GemStone's BADNAME verb. This was originally approved back in 2017 when Evike proposed it, but time, need of a coder, and other things pulling our attention kept it backburnered until now.

Let's talk briefly about names and policy before we get to the verb.

First off -- NOTHING is changing in regards to NAMING POLICY or how staff handles names. POLICY 6 covers names, and at the end of the day, staff will make the final decisions. We know names are a hot button issue sometimes -- you see a name you just hate, and NOTHING happens to it even though you reported it! A lot of names players raise concerns with don't actually cross the lines of our policies. Those that do quietly disappear, and only the GMs and the player forced to rename ever know about it.

This new BADNAME verb is meant to help with a little more transparency in that area. You can use it to report a name you feel should be reviewed along with the reason WHY. When a name has been reported by others, you'll be told that it's already been reported to staff for review. If you try to report a name you've already reported, it just clears your old reason and replaces it with the new reason.

If we decide to toss a name because it crossed the line, it will continue to quietly disappear. If we end up OK'ing a name, GMs have the ability to provide a response so that if others try reporting it in the future, they're simply told staff has already reviewed it along with the reason provided. Sometimes this may be as simple as "It doesn't violate the rules", but you'll at least see that we HAVE reviewed the name and made a decision.

Usage: BADNAME {player} {reason} - File a request that a player's name be reviewed

That's a lot of words for such a small verb, but I wanted to be clear that we're not changing naming policy or processes, we're just offering a new tool for you to clearly convey WHY you feel a name should go, along with a little more transparency when we review them. This is live everywhere.

Next week's project looks to be a pair of QoL updates from our reserves while we focus on some bigger things that you'll see in the future!
