Knowing a technique provides a bonus pretty equivalent to what the old barbarian weapon forging bonus was.

Now, to explain things further...

Techniques from skill can be spent on any Crafting Discipline's techniques in that skill.

Techniques from a career or hobby can only be spent on techniques from the Crafting Discipline you picked as your career or hobby.

Techniques from a guild bonus can be spent on any technique in the Crafting Discipline they apply to.

So, if a particular system is in that Crafting Discipline, you can spend technique points on it. If Tinkering contains Trap making, Siege engine design, Crossbow assmebling, instrument construction and toy making, you could spend tinkering technique points on any of those. We have no plans to limit Bards to just instrument creation, for example.

Some more clarification...

Bonus techniques ARE very important. From skill alone you can only get 12 techniques in a SKILL. Each skill will have approximately 90 techniques in it spread across all 3 disciplines when the system is finished. Picking a hobby gives up to 6 bonus techniques in a crafting DISCIPLINE. A career gives up to 12.

So... if you are a Lore Primary guild with 3 bonus techniques in Tinkering and pick it and Carving as a Career, and Shaping as a Hobby, you'd have 45 picks total if my math is right. So, 45 out of 90 for a given crafting SKILL.

As more systems come out it will begin to make more sense. I've recently mentioned how I've been focused on Barbarians, but in the downtime I've managed to get another big release together. Once the area is done we should have some fun things for folks to play with!

Hope that clears things up.
