It may change, but my intention is that having knowledge of Arcana itself imposes an escalating penalty. A Barbarian could then use MDs all day long and not suffer any additional problems (except, of course, for the risk of acquiring even more Arcana).

As people have taken great pains to point out in this thread, Inner Magic relies more on its practioniers' own internal resources and state of mind than the natural-sciences bend of other forms magic. Thus the root of the problem for Barbarians: they build their house on a foundation of a complete rejection of magic. Arcana is unclean knowledge to them, antithetical to their discipline, and acquiring it pushes the Barbarian further and further away from the platonic ideal of Barbarianess. New ideas are introduced, new crutches are now an act of will away, and the wild individualism suffers. God forbid if the Barbarian should go too deep, explore a channel of thought too esoteric, and flirt with Attunement.

Which isn't to say Arcana would be a bad idea for Barbarians, just that it'll have an impact.
