oiled fishtail oak cistre with an elaborately carved fretwork rose
Look: As on a lute, the cistre's rose takes the place of the open soundhole in a traditional gittern. In this instrument, eight bands of wood intersect to form a star, around which a riot of flowering vines twine in lush profusion. A drone fixed within the instrument's bent neck vibrates with each plucked string to produce the characteristic echo that distinguishes the cistre from the lute.
