Smokestone is a precious variation of smoky quartz. When light shines through this glassy black gemstone, hidden inclusions are brightly illuminated, resembling tendrils of smoke against a dark background.

They are found exclusively within pegmatites, igneous rocks that exhibit large interlocking crystals, that formed deep underground. These pegmatites are normally found within the metamorphic aureole, the area surrounding intrusions of magma that is subject to contact metamorphism, of granite.

Normally deep underground – below the reaches of even the most ambitious Dwarven miners! – the smokestone-bearing pegmatites can be uplifted by the creation of mountains. Thus, they are generally found in mountainous regions of mainland Kermoria. The Himineldar Shel (a mountain range in eastern Forfedhdar) is especially known for producing high-quality smokestones.

Alteration Rules

This material is required for alterations.

Although smokestones can technically be faceted, they are usually cut and polished in cabochons so as to best display their wispy inclusions.
