Song
You begin to sing "A Moon Mage's Tale", a song by Lydon Silverspyre.
- "Four hundred miles I traveled
- From my village on the Plains
- Seeking greater challenges
- Than milking cows and raising grain.
- A wandering minstrel passing through,
- Had sung tales for a fee
- Of monsters fierce and heroes bold
- At the Crossing by the sea."
- "'At last!', I cried, 'My destiny!',
- For Fate had surely planned
- Far greater things for me in life
- Than the tilling of the land.
- All that I owned fit in one bag,
- That I slung across my back,
- Setting out to seek my Fortune
- And all my life now lacked."
- "The village Elders shook their heads.
- What more could someone need
- Than the quiet life among the flocks-
- The land, the sun, the seed?
- I think my father understood,
- He'd felt adventure call.
- He hugged me hard and wished me luck
- As we left the meeting hall."
- "Strange peoples, stranger villages,
- I passed through every day,
- Moving onward toward the Crossing,
- Grand city on the bay.
- Elvenkind and Dwarvenkind,
- Other folks I couldn't name.
- Odd animals and plants that moved,
- A lake alive with flame."
- "I climbed a largish hill one day,
- And when I reached the crest
- It lay there at my feet, a jewel,
- The object of my quest.
- The Crossing gates were opened wide
- Inviting me to view
- The wonders of a lifetime
- Known only to a few."
- "The guards glanced at me knowingly,
- They'd seen my kind before,
- A star-struck youth, a vagabond,
- Tempting Fate beyond the doors.
- I found a moneylender
- Who appraised me with a glance,
- Whether youth or charm or just a hunch,
- She thought me worth a chance."
- "I sought direction from the guilds,
- I checked them all in turn
- Seeking my true calling.
- What secrets could I learn?
- The Rogues were skilled in spotting traps,
- And picking locks, and stealth,
- But I'm not very nimble,
- Though tempted by their wealth."
- "The Fighters, fierce, could slay great beasts,
- Some with a single stroke.
- The Master took one look at me
- And laughed until he choked.
- The same response from Paladins.
- They found me far too frail-
- 'Even with the Gods' own help
- You certainly would fail.'"
- "I must say that they were kindly
- And chuckled with no malice,
- But thought perhaps another choice,
- 'Please do not find us callous.'
- They asked me, 'Could you be a bard?',
- I thought, then shook my head,
- The last time I had voiced a tune
- The dogs hid 'neath the bed."
- "'And what about a Trader?'
- 'Mayhaps, but then again,
- When I went to buy a rooster
- They offed on me, a hen!'
- And then the clerics came to mind,
- But I'm not quite divine,
- Just then there came a thunderclap,
- We took it as a sign."
- "'We're running short of choices.'
- They whispered and conferred.
- They turned toward me quite solemn,
- 'There's one you haven't heard.'
- 'A mystic bunch, Moon Mages,
- They hold their secrets dear.'
- And as they said the words, I knew,
- A vision came quite clear."
- "Of skies at night all filled with stars
- And three moons shining bright.
- Each one full, though it was noon,
- 'Twas certain to be right.
- They nodded in agreement
- And sent me on my way
- To learn a new profession,
- That I've practiced to this day."
- "Come one, come all, and try the test,
- There's Fortune to be found,
- Within the Crossing and beyond,
- Adventure knows no bound."
The last note fades.
