Combat Use

THROW is a thrown-weapon combat maneuver. It is moderately damaging and has the normal chance for a weapon to lodge. Among the three standard thrown-weapon attacks, HURL is the most accurate, THROW is moderately accurate and LOB is the least accurate. HURL and LOB have their own damage and lodging behavior.

The bare command selects the right-hand item. The LEFT and RIGHT forms select a hand explicitly; an offhand throw can train Offhand Weapon skill. The item must be held, and a two-handed item requires the other hand to be free. A normal combat throw reveals the attacker from hiding.

The opening attack description, defense result, damage, lodging result, combat assessment and roundtime vary. A successful damaging attack can lodge the weapon; otherwise the weapon falls to the ground or at the attacker's feet.

Some objects have item-specific THROW behavior instead of the standard combat maneuver. Such items may accept their own nouns, targets or prepositions, and their individual item pages supply the applicable syntax. Dirt, naphtha, toys, food, traps and game pieces are examples of objects that can route through special behavior.

Failure Messages

  • You need a free hand to throw the <item>. — a two-handed item requires a free hand, but both hands are occupied.
  • The <item> is stuck to your hand like glue. — the selected item is cursed and cannot be thrown.
  • That would be a neat trick. — the selected item was also named as its own target.
  • Attacking an object? — the named object is not handled by item-specific THROW behavior.
  • You want to hit yourself in the foot? — you named yourself as the combat target.
  • Oddly, some sort of resistance prevents you from attacking <target>. — the target resists the attack.

Ventriloquism
