Tanzanite is a blue and violet mineral that is noted for appearing alternately blue, violet, and burgundy depending on orientation and lighting conditions.

In its rough state, tanzanite is colored reddish brown to clear and requires heat treatment to remove the brownish "veil" and bring out the blue-violet of the stone.
