As most of you know I've been floundering around with a scream concept for the past year (::cough:: few years ::cough::).

To get myself into character I put in my favorite CD and gorged on pretzels and alcohol and here's what came to me.

The definition of screams? The Bards ability to use their voice as a weapon (no Dune references please). For a very long time I bounced between mirroring magic-like contests (Will vs. Will) and writing up standalone abilities much like what you have today. In all that a very simple precept was lost - the voice as a weapon. So yeah, in my drunken stupor it came to me. Pass vocal skill through normal combat as a weapon. Could it be done? Yes, and it will.

First, let's take what we know now and throw it out the window.

- Scream defiance is too restrictive. You give up most of your other abilities for one. The hoarse voice stuff is going away.

- Screams will not be something you will want to use every other round in combat. They will be somewhat situational but very useful when you need them.

- Screams will be directly influenced by and drain the Bard mojo. If you don't know how to restore it, now is the time to learn.

- Screams will pit your vocal skill against the target's defensive prowess in combat.

- Primary attribute that enhances screams is Charisma. Defenses will be enhanced by Discipline. Stamina will also aide both the aggressor and the defender.

Ok, now that we have that out of the way let's talk a bit more about what we're going to do.

I have received approval for 5 screams. The first will be granted at circle 30 (currently defiance) and another will be granted every ten circles up to 70th.

Defiance will be changing a to a fair degree. Given that you have all been very patient with me I'm going to go ahead and spill the beans on what we're going to do with it and provide you a few teasers as to what the remaining abilities will do.

Defiance - a daring or bold resistance to authority or to any opposing force, a challenge to meet in combat or in a contest. Scream defiance will be defensive in nature and restore your balance in combat and you may find yourself a bit more light on your feet should you fall prone. It will attempt to attach a mild to moderate stun to your aggressors should you win the contest.

Now, for the teasers ... it's in the name!

40th - Havoc - Defensive<br />

With their superior vocal training, Bards are able to focus their voices to do some extraordinary tasks. Bardic Screams are taught by the Guild and provide a variety of tools to aid the Bard in whatever situation they may come across.

Screams are currently in the process of being rewritten and will be much more use-friendly after the rewrite.

Scream Concussive

  • 20th circle requirement.
  • Basic damage-dealing attack that scales similarly to throwing blades. Due to a bug it taught light blunt instead of vocals for a short period of time.
  • 10 second re-use timer.

Scream Defiance

Scream Defiance was rewritten and released on 1/10/2008, and is a short duration defense/utility buff that will do the following:

  • Attempt to remove a stun, each pulse, which is random based on charisma (high enough charisma can virtually negate the chance to fail)
  • Helps the Bard maintain a minimum of solid balance if not completely prone in combat.
  • Reduce incoming damage, based on the bard's mojo.

The duration of the ability is based on vocal lore skill.

Notable changes from the original version of the ability:

  • You can now scream while immobile
  • You will no longer go hoarse from use but you will lose mojo (thus effectiveness)
  • Scream Defiance no longer generates a justice check for disturbing the peace

Miscellaneous Info:

  • Taught at 32nd circle by any Guild Leader
  • Requires and uses Bardic Mojo
  • Note: killing other players will hurt your mojo!

I forgot to mention this in the announcement ... it wasn't new to me since I've been tinkering for awhile now. :-P
