If the spell pattern was collapsing at more than 5 mana, it would indicate that the spell was only actually cast at 5 mana. This has happened quite often with new cyclics because held mana prior to the cast isn't added to the cast for cyclics, but is held over in case the cyclic needs harnessed mana to power it.

If the infusion was backfiring then that would indicate you were failing the skill check for that amount of mana to be infused, which checks a lot of different factors in addition to base skill.

To answer your question:

The amount you cast Resurrection at is the maximum you can infuse per shot.

There is a small modifier to the degree of specialness at the completion of the raise that is based on devotion, and another small random modifier.
