There's a difference between what is broadly holy, and what is "healthy" for the sanctified soul. Again, this is getting into stuff that Dartenian wrote that never quite made it known IC before he unfortunately had to leave.

It's possible that we will change it, so don't think this is an absolute answer. But the answer right now, going with the lore that exists right now, is that a Paladin needs to abide by the demands of his soul, not necessarily the demands of the gods.
