Game Helpfile
The FIRE Verb is used to fire a ranged weapon. If you are aiming or facing a specific non-player target, you can just FIRE to fire your weapon. If firing on another player you will always need to specify the target after the fire. Syntax: FIRE <Target>
Use
FIRE requires a loaded bow, crossbow or sling in your right hand. It spends any current AIM and resolves a ranged attack against the selected target. The attack line identifies the ammunition rather than the weapon: arrows, bolts and sling ammunition all use the form You fire <ammunition> at <target>. The opening description of the attack, the target's defense, the hit result and the combat assessment vary with the combat result.
You may fire before reaching full aim or without aiming. This produces a less accurate snap shot. If you name a different target from the one you aimed at, the shot still goes at the named target as a snap shot. Firing ends the aim whether the shot was fully aimed or not.
A dual-loaded bow fires both pieces of ammunition at the same target and reports each attack separately. The second shot is less effective than the first.
Firing while invisible makes you visible. POACH and SNIPE provide separate ranged attacks for use from concealment.
An arm-worn shield can hinder a shot. The penalty depends on the weapon, shield and character, and the game reports the applicable degree with one of the following lines:
- Your attempt is slightly hindered by your <shield>.
- Your attempt is hindered by your <shield>.
- Your attempt is greatly hindered by your <shield>.
- Your attempt is severely hindered by your <shield>.
Roundtime
A normal shot produces a bracketed [Roundtime <n> sec.] line. The resulting roundtime depends on the current ranged-combat rules and effects acting on the attack.
Failure Messages
- But you don't have a ranged weapon in your hand to fire with! — there is no ranged weapon available to fire.
- You can't fire the <item>! — the item selected as the weapon is not a ranged weapon that FIRE can use.
- But your <weapon> isn't loaded! — the ranged weapon has no ammunition loaded.
- That weapon must be in your right hand to fire! — the aimed weapon is no longer in the required hand.
- What are you trying to attack? — no valid target was supplied or established.
- The <target> is already quite dead. — the selected creature has already died.
- Trying to attack yourself? — you named yourself as the target.
- There is no need for violence here. — combat is prohibited in the current location.
Special Weapons
Some launchers and ranged devices override ordinary FIRE behavior. Siege engines such as the Ballista and scorpion, the repeating crossbow, and game-specific launchers can have their own aiming, firing or readiness syntax. Their instructions take precedence over the standard forms on this page.
