Balance command

Balance
Reports your current combat balance, or, at a bank teller, your account balance at that branch.
BALANCE (outside a bank) You see: You are solidly balanced. BALANCE (at a bank teller) You see: The clerk pages through her ledger. "<Name>, it looks like your current balance is 9 platinum, 2 gold, 7 silver, 2 bronze, and 9 copper Kronars." Others see: <Name> and the clerk share a few words. BALANCE (at a bank teller, with no account at that branch) You see: The clerk flips through her ledger then says, "<Name>, you do not seem to have an account with us. If you would like to open one, you need only deposit a few Kronars." Others see: The clerk explains something to <Name>.

Syntax

• BALANCE

Reports your combat balance. Inside a bank, reports your account balance at that branch instead.

• BAL

Abbreviated form.

CHECK BALANCE is interchangeable with this command.

Combat Balance

Away from a bank, the command answers with a single adjective describing how well-balanced you currently are, from best to worst:

incredibly balanced
adeptly balanced
nimbly balanced
solidly balanced
slightly off balance
off balance
somewhat off balance
badly balanced
very badly balanced
extremely imbalanced
completely imbalanced
hopelessly unbalanced

Solidly balanced is the neutral baseline: the states above it are gains and those below it are losses. Balance is consumed and recovered by the maneuvers you choose, and stuns drive it down the scale. See Combat#Balance and Position for how balance feeds into attack and defense.

Banking

Inside a bank, the command reads your account at that branch rather than your footing. Balances are kept separately per province, and the clerk reads the total out denomination by denomination in the coin that branch uses; denominations you hold none of are left out of the line entirely.

Two teller wordings are used interchangeably, one of which greets you by surname first:

The clerk pages through her ledger. "<Lastname>, <Name>," she says to herself. "Here we are. Your current balance is 877 platinum, 8 gold, 2 silver, and 9 bronze Kronars."

Branches that keep coins in labeled jars rather than a ledger word the same reading differently:

You find your jar with little effort, thankfully, and carefully count out the contents of it. As expected, there are 51379 platinum, 2 gold, 3 silver, and 5 copper Dokoras.

Searching methodically through the shelves, you finally manage to locate the jar labeled <Name>, and carefully count out the contents of it.

A jar branch reports a missing account in kind:

You sift through shelf after shelf of the jars -- "Gorund," "Wickett," "Turialo," "Tekemi," "Tokomi" and countless others, but can't for the life of you find one with your name!

A clerk cannot serve you while you are hidden or invisible:

How can you check your balance when the clerk can't even see you?

At a remote transfer office, a moon mage checks the balance you hold in another province:

After a quick check, a moon mage replies "You have 1 copper Kronars in Crossing."

After a quick check a moon mage replies, "You don't have an account in Crossing."

A moon mage squints curiously at you, then points to the sign.

• BANK ACCOUNT reports your balances at every branch at once, without travelling to a bank.
