== Shalswar boxes ==

Was getting the longshot messaging for both disarm and lockpick, and some hefty RT's, but I was able to open a couple of these today with the following:
215 disarm
227 lockpick
39 agility
empath
Going to put any more of these I get into the vault and try again in 10-15 ranks, took 3-5 minutes per box with the above to finally get open, although they had pretty decent loot (multiple gold coins, large gems, etc.).
== Germish'din boxes ==

With pretty much the same ranks as in the above (shalswar) post, I find the boxes from the Misshapen Germish'din to be about the same or maybe slightly harder, would need a few more to tell for sure. Anyhow, I was able to get these open after a time, again with the longshot messaging and with some hefty RT on fails. I think these are right at the cusp of my skill with my current ranks.
Great Article!

Very nicely done, Kraelyst! I'm just adding some wikicode and gonna improve the lead sentences a bit. --Farman 12:09, 4 November 2007 (CST)

I but down some of my best guesses as to what a nonthief needs to open boxes on the higher end. They'd be using careful and probably blowing more than a few of the traps but it should be possible. Raji

Nice to see this information. I posted my feedback on my current in game experiences with disarming on my way up to expert levels in disarming. Could something similar to this with lockpicking appear on here too? I say this because I find that lockpicking is harder to do than it is to disarm a box. For example;

Back when I was at 225 disarm/lockpicking, I was able to disarm many adan'f boxes, around 6 out of 10, without setting off the traps. When it came to picking the locks on the disarmed boxes, I could easily spend a half hour or more just trying to pick all of those locks.

Now flash forward to my current skills. I recently visited the Adan'f in the barrows (Mages/Warriors) and picked up 10 boxes. I blew two of the traps (gas trap and cyanide). After disarming the boxes, I set about picking the boxes. I had to give up on two of the boxes, as I broke three master lockpicks on those two boxes. This is with 267 disarm/257 lockpicking. - Vagle

Terminology

Maximum cap needs to be defined. Someone want to volunteer? --Diarik 03:45, 2 April 2008 (CDT)

I'd guess that maximum cap would be when you always see the message "virtually no chance of failing". This however does not mean you cannot gain experience disarming boxes. I am still able to lock my disarming skill (280) by identifying, marking and quickly disarming hatchling boxes. --Vagle 07:17, 9 May 2008 (CDT)

I am of the opinion we should add another column: "Teaches to". Renian 07:32, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Spirit Dancer box difficulty

I just got a "jump off a cliff" appraisal while disarming a small batch of Spirit Dancer boxes. This is with 270 disarm, so the minimum is > 270 to never see the "jump off a cliff" message while disarming boxes.

Vagle - 13 April 2008 (CDT)

Just hit 271 and found another cliff jumper box. I stowed this box just to see when the appraisal changes for certain.

--Vagle 18:45, 14 April 2008 (CDT)

I just hit 272 disarm and still got "jump off of a cliff" while identifying the same spirit dancer box I picked up a couple of days ago. Will try again when I hit 273.

--Vagle 15:12, 15 April 2008 (CDT)

Just hit 273 in disarming and still got "Jump off of a cliff" while identifying a spirit dancer trap. Also increased my agility from 38 to 40 today as well.

--Vagle 10:34, 20 April 2008 (CDT)

Just hit 274 in disarming and still got "Jump off of a cliff" while identifying a spirit dancer trap.

--Vagle 22:00, 21 April 2008 (CDT)

Just hit 275 in disarming and still got "Jump off of a cliff" while identifying a spirit dancer trap. I also verified that orc raider boxes require > 275 disarming to never see "Jump off of a cliff".

--Vagle 11:50, 25 April 2008 (CDT)

I hit 276 in disarming today and the appraisal has changed to "Snowball's chance".

--Vagle 14:48, 26 April 2008 (CDT)

I've now hit 280 and checked the same spirit dancer box. Still snowballs chance. --Vagle 07:13, 9 May 2008 (CDT)

Shadoweaver boxes

Just started working through the boxes from the Shadoweavers past Corik's Wall. As a rule, getting 'at your skill level' or 'minor troubles' with them having 176 disarm, 188 lockpick. Kythryn

adan'f boxes

So helping with the low end of things...I just gave the mage/warrior boxes another try and while I was getting "The odds are against you..."/"The lock has the edge on you..." with disarming and picking, I was able to open half a dozen sucessfully. Took some time though, used the careful options for every step available. Definately not going to use these for training yet, but nice to know I can get them in a pinch.

disarm - 191
lockpick - 203

Shard Gremlin boxes

These look to be just slightly easier than the Adan'f warrior/mage boxes. They do have the scarab traps in the mix, so are in that 'tier'. I have no trouble opening them now with the following, still using careful pretty often but starting to open them normal depending on the trap. lockpick - 222 disarm - 208 agility - 35 empath --Kythryn 08:55, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Muspar'i moneygrubber, etc. boxes

The speculate stun on these guys is a mess, but they are funny to hunt, and drop a ton of boxes. None of my skills over 200 ranks were moving, so I didn't expect much from the boxes. After gathering a pack of them though, doing full harvests and quick options, I was still able to get both lockpick and disarm moving ok. 30/34 after 25 boxes. Normally wouldn't be worth it, but I picked those up in less than 15 minutes IIRC (however long my avenger was out til it wandered off), so it wasn't that big of a time sink. Wish these had been released 50 ranks ago, would have been great training! Currently sitting at:

 • lockpick - 222
 • disarm - 208
 • agility - 35
 • empath
