There's no such thing as "auto-focus" telescopes -- merely telescopes so crude that their focus cannot be adjusted at all. The logic behind whether or not you succeed at an observation hasn't been touched since the game's inception, so the scaling of the game made telescopes long since irrelevent except to pass the binary "Naked eye observable?" check. This will probably change some day, but not anytime soon. -Armifer
