Description: Rife with symbolic cynicism, the Book Burning spell produces an echo of your ruined purity that once was, a reminder of all that you have lost. This echo will light your way and bring cleansing soulfire upon the wrongs which must be righted. When you strike your foes with your magics, Book Burning will support you, marking them with all the fiery rage of your sins.
Effect: Impact damage, Fire damage, Summon a wearable torch that may attack targets you cast an offensive spell on. Light source.
Example Messaging: Cast:
You lance the unhealed wounds in your soul and hear them sing -- a sermon of penance for your ears alone.

The mental strain of this pattern is considerably eased by your ritual focus.
Tears of hot regret flow down your eyes, collecting in your left palm. Bright and furious as the sun, the liquid burns with ivory flames until a spectral torch takes shape from the conflagration.

REMOVE/HOLD TORCH:
You hold out your hand, and the spectral torch drifting near you falls into your grasp.

WEAR TORCH
You toss your spectral torch aside but it stops in midair, drifting doggedly near you.

Torch attacks a creature while it is worn:
You are revealed.
The airborne spectral torch near you flares as the flame shoots up to double its height!
A sleazy lout pales and shakes under the strain of your attack!
With an angry howl, a gust of burning air and ivory brilliance buffets a sleazy lout, leaving raw burns and blistered skin on its shoulder.

Torch attacks a creature while it is held:
You are revealed.
Fire engulfs the spectral torch in your hand like exploding phosphor!
A sleazy lout pales and shakes under the strain of your attack!
A brilliant exhalation of burning wind blows through a sleazy lout. Furious waves of ivory flame radiate out from its abdomen as it disintegrates beneath the wind. There is a distant peal of bells in the air, fading away.

Spell ending:
A spectral torch lit with pale ivory flame brightens noticeably as waves of intense heat wash outward from it. Soon it is utterly consumed in a white-hot conflagration of the burning air around it.

Devices/Tattoos: No devices or tattoos documented.

Notes

  • This is a ritual spell that will create a spectral torch. Meant to be a significant part of a Redeemed's damage output, it has a chance to fire TM attacks following any single-target offensive spell you cast. The torch can be worn or held -- the latter will lend added accuracy to its attacks.
  • STUDY TORCH (held) - You think you can WEAR the torch, forgoing some of the accuracy of its attacks.
  • STUDY TORCH (worn) - You think you can REMOVE or HOLD the torch, lending added accuracy to its attacks.
  • WEAR TORCH - Moves the torch from your hand to floating near you.
  • REMOVE/HOLD TORCH - Moves the torch from floating near you to your hand. This prioritizes the left hand if available.
  • Activation chance is higher against cursed targets. Against cursed/undead creatures, activation is guaranteed. Against cursed players, it depends on their level of Divine Outrage or soul corruption.
  • The torch's attack is separate from the cast that triggers it, occurring after a slight delay.
  • The torch will pull the caster from hiding when it attacks.
  • The torch will occasionally say part of a zealous Redeemed mantra when it attacks.
  • Provides lighting to the room.
  • You may obtain an Anabasis ritual focus by bringing a Maelshyvean hierophant's tentacle to the Redeemed "guild leader."
  • Like all other Anabasis spells, this is not taught by the various guildleaders.
  • Like all other Anabasis spells, this spell only functions while Redeemed.
  • The torch is visible in your LOOK but not in the room description.

Justice

  • The spell will trigger justice mechanics on cast.
  • Attacks by the torch will also trigger justice mechanics.
  • Walking around or interacting with NPCs while the torch is active does not trigger justice mechanics.
