Description
The gremlin stands waist-high to a Human, though its perpetually hunched figure indicates it could possibly look one in the eye if it bothered to stand up straight. Black leathery reptilian skin covers its entire body, reflecting little light. Spindly legs would appear to be too thin to support its wide-shouldered frame, but its easy, predatory grace belies any implied clumsiness. A wide, triangular head with large pointed ears sits atop a short narrow neck, and it glares about with squinting yellow eyes.
In Depth
This is a good option after young gryphons slow down. Gen rate is good.
Spells
Yellow-bristled gremlins constantly cast both Arc Light (AL) and Gar Zeng (GZ). They cast the former about 75% more frequently then the latter. The gremlins can and will cast spells from any engagement range, yet they commonly advance to engage opponents in melee instead of lingering at range. They do not HANGBACK (05/05/2021).
- Spell prep - A yellow-bristled gremlin begins to wave its arms in a magical fashion, focusing on you!
- Spell cast - A yellow-bristled gremlin gestures rudely at you.
Yellow-bristled gremlins are significantly more dangerous spell casters than their red-bristled kin. Their Gar Zeng casts will quickly shred ablative spell barriers (like Veil of Ice) and will pass through non-ablative barriers (like Aether Cloak) that would prove complete, unwavering defenses against their red-bristled kin's Fire Balls (05/05/2021).
- Veil of Ice (VOI): Attributes 40, warding 475, 65 mana - will survive its full duration while under constant Fire Ball assault from red-bristled gremlins, negating every cast. Conversely, yellow-bristled gremlins can destroy the same in one to a few GZ casts (05/05/2021). Attributes 40, warding 510, 80 mana - the ward is shattered just as quickly (5/15/2025).
- Aether Cloak (AC): Attributes 40, warding 475, 10 mana - will completely block all and also reflect many red-bristled gremlin fireballs. Yellow-bristled gremlins' GZ casts; however, will effectively ignore such a ward (05/05/2021). Attributes 40, warding 510, 15 mana - will consistently block and reflect yellow-bristled gremlins' GZ casts (5/15/2025).
- Ethereal Shield (ES) will mitigate electric damage that bypasses other defenses, like that from a glancing block.
Recommend at least 45 stamina(Arc Light endure)/50 reflex (GZ dodge), in order to avoid most magical hits and be able to hunt for any period of time. - CHRISTIANM7 28 March 2017
- I was able to resist their Arc Light after raising Stamina to 45 (also had 50 Discipline and 40 Strength).
- With 40 +3 stamina about 44% of yellow-bristled gremlins' AL casts stun (05/10/2025).
- Gar Zeng will still hit long after you can avoid all of their weapon attacks.
- With 40 +7 reflex, a 30th degree shield expert (330 ranks) with an arm-worn round sipar can solidly block most GZ strikes (negating all damage) and partially block the rest (preventing a direct strike, mitigating damage). Likewise, a 40th degree evasion expert (340 ranks) can dodge most casts (05/10/2025).
Skill Caps
- Weapons: Viable hunting and reasonable mindlocking with skills at 280 (435/465 Mastery). Debilitation spells and tactical maneuvers sufficiently alleviate any issues landing strikes (05/10/2025).
- Defenses: Skills around 335 [331-341] mindlock reasonably well and are sufficient for sustained enagement with multiple gremlins (05/10/2025). Evasion soft caps at 410 - January 2015.
- Targeted Magic: mindlocked at 339 (05/10/2025).
- Debilitation: mindlocked at 358 (05/10/2025).
- Tactics: mindlock at 402 (05/10/2025).
- Locksmithing: Skill at 310 safely opens boxes and mindlocks using CAREFUL (05/10/2025). See Equipment/Loot section below for further details.
- Skinning: Able to skin on occasion but not reliably (no arranges) at 190 Skinning (03/24/2016). Consistently skinned skillfully without arranging at 403, eventually mindlocking the skill after 40 skins. Able to fully arrange and ARRANGE ALL at 403, quickly mindlocking the skill, but failing often and producing poor products when successful (05/10/2025).
- First Aid: DISSECTing with skill at 322 is around 50% successful - April 2023.
APPRAISE CAREFUL info:
- Weapons at 280 (435/465 Mastery) the gremlin is an opponent beneath your abilities (-4) to you'd kill quickly (-7) that would train acceptably (4/7) (05/10/2025).
- Defenses around 335 [331-341] the gremlin is a worthy (-3) to definitely less skilled (-6) opponent that would train acceptably (4/7) (05/10/2025).
- TM (339) train acceptably (4/7). Debilitation (358) train somewhat poorly (3/7). Tactics (401) train somewhat poorly (3/7) (05/10/2025).

- SEARCHing gremlin corpses will only locate coins, gems, boxes and random creature drops. Doing so will not retrieve their equipment. However, LOOTing them for EQUIPMENT or ALL will. Alternatively, their held items (shields and weapons) can be acquired by forcing the gremlins to drop them. Significant limb (hand/arm) damage or magic such as Tingle will do the trick. Then, GET the dropped items from the ground.
- The 'distressed' (but undamaged) items gremlins carry tend to appraise as slightly lower quality than basic versions found in stores and carried by other critters.
- Gremlins are known to steal weapons from each other, which can be pretty humorous to watch.
