To (not really) answer a question that came up during the meeting: there's no evidence that the Prydaen or Rakash had access to advanced Lunar magic.
The sects were not present in the west, and the refugees did not bring with them a distinct tradition. All Prydaen and Rakash Lunar mages in living memory were trained by the Moon Mage Guild. You'd have to ask any unliving ones yourself. Now, the fog of war is a problem. Its been two generations since anyone lived out west and things can get a little confused in oral traditions. The story of Lyras's very short time dead includes high magic (and reference to an invisibility trick not commonly known in the east)...but it's also sitting right next to a comment about Human Warrior Mages aiding their struggle. The stance of the Moon Mage Guild is that the vague reference to Moon Mages probably refers to easterners that were in the area and helping out (undead armies are, after all, everybody's business). The reference to something as exceptional as cloaking multiple people in refractive fields, no doubt, is simply an exaggeration that proves the story tellers didn't know what was what. Some Rakash in the guild are not particularly happy about the ethnocentrism, and make attempts to prove their forefathers were perfectly competent magicians. There isn't enough proof either way, but the Moon Mage Guild might be in for a shock someday. | |
